_Dilili in Paris_ is an animated film for tourists of Paris and tourists of history.

Set in Paris during the Belle Époque, Dilili is a young half-African child who has to crack a mysterious kidnapping ring targeting young girls. In order to get to the bottom of the conspiracy, she meets every well-known personality associated with Paris at that period, including Camille Claudel, Maire Curie, Sarah Bernhardt, Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso...

There's a lot to like in Dilili. The story is interesting and the feminist slant is handled well, if a little darkly. The animation is gorgeous at moments and goes a long way to gilding the movie with a sense of wonder.

I was, however, torn about the decision to use photographs as the background for the animation. The style was original but made it look as though the images were drawn on postcards and gave the animation a real 2-dimensional feel.

The other distraction was the inclusion of so many celebrities. At times it felt like there existed a master list and the writers were just crossing them off one by one even though the characters served no real purpose in advancing the story.

When you reach the end credits, however, the good feelings that linger mean the film delivers and is worth the watch.
