This could have been a 7.5 or 8 but they had to go and change the ending from the book. Because it always works so well well shows think they can do better than Stephen King did. They just had to kill Dan. Why you assholes? Why?

@anthoney65 Yeah same ending as the Shining mini-series but with Danny dying how Jack did.

As an adaptation of King's work, this is pretty decent. It sticks close to many of the book's plot points, and its only until the end when it seems to veer off course a little. It perhaps overdoes the Shining references a little too much, and it could have been tighter, but if you're a fan of the books (which I am), there is still a lot to enjoy. I'm only giving it a 7 because it lacked coherency at times, and because it dragged occasionally. But don't let that put you off, as there are times when the film (and Ferguson especially) shine!

The most interesting part, Danny becoming a violent addict gets essentially resolved ten minutes into the movie, with little payoff late in the movie.

Even this being replaced by him getting his shit together and being the guy that comforts people before they die in hospice isn't really explored anywhere near enough.

Far too much time wasted on these highly superpowered beings who can astral-project but still need to rely on Winnebagos to get from a to b in physical form.

The Total Eclipse of the Heart eyes was certainly something.

Didn't rate the bad guys otherwise. Felt like a rejected 80s Bond villain and the graphic child murders was unnecessary in the context of them hamming it up on screen. Rebecca Ferguson in particular was terrible. You're supposed to hate the character as shes a vicious child murderer. Instead she's an annoying campy hipster with a ridiculously awful accent.

Credit for trying to bring a new mythology to The Shining. It just didn't make sense either in its execution, pacing or plot. [/SPOILER]

Good to see the hotel again with a new shine to it.. I’ve not read the books so i can’t compare so it’s film alone that I thought was decent with some good action, cool effects, easy to follow simple plot and dark at times along with a good performance from ewan mcgreger and the rest of the cast.

Better than i expected with great cinematography, nice plot, nice locations and also great cast with Ferguson in the lead as she was perfect for this role. It's a very well made movie and interesting even though it's almost three hours long. 7.7/10

I thought it was pretty good. I really enjoyed the book and I feel that even with the changes, it added to the story and kept me guessing what was going to happen. I absolutely loved the score as it was so reminiscent of the shining. The change from the books ending added to the story. I thought they cleverly added so many touches from the shining that just heightened my attention to be able to spot them. I also liked that they did not use deaging but cast new characters who closely resembled the original actors.

Relies too heavily on the novels and Kubrick's film to ever really feel like it has legs enough to stand on its own. Although there are interesting bits in this film, it does not ever come to fruition in a meaningful way and often seems to misunderstand the thesis behind the novel it's based on. Instead, _Doctor Sleep_ chugs along at a dreary pace until its third act goes completely off the rails. For the majority of this film I thought it was decent. As soon as we got to the climax it became dreadful. Yikes.

A sequel that expands the universe of The Shining and has a ton of references. The story is fine. The acting is good. The set design and seeing the Overlook again is great. It is a little long and not super scary but a pretty good sequel.

3 hrs of meh.

It has splashes of remade shots from The Shining thrown in to try to keep the fan in you awake.

*extremely annoying heartbeat sounds layered on thick...
I assume to create tension.

Why did they bother reshooting shots from TS with new actors if they weren't even going to make them relevant with changes? Just use the original footage.

3 Thoughts After Watching ‘Doctor Sleep’:

1. This film totally stands on its own and as a satisfying sequel to a classic. Not an easy task.
2. The Shining throwbacks gave me life.
3. I loved the villain and Abra was badass.

Okay, I understand the hype about this movie. There was the wait, the expectation about it. But really guys, it was disappointing. I felt so betrayed because I was expecting some thriller or anything that could honor Stephen King’s name, instead I saw some lunatics eating steam from little kids. Like, whaaaat?
I had to boo it in the end. Really, really MEH.

A very decent horror film.
The first two acts are like a dark version of _Logan_, but with Professor X in the leading role.
It's well acted, shot (Mike Flanagan truly has a unique visual style) and chilling.
Rebecca Ferguson makes for a good cocaine addict.
However, the movie also drags quite a bit, and uses fan service in all the wrong ways (i.e. a lot of forced 'remember this?' moments).

6.5/10
