A very unique movie that I'm sure offends a lot of people. Still it has good humor and a fun cast. Plus the story is so absurd it's never boring.

Forever a cult classic.

I love "Dogma." That may be largely due to nostalgia; I watched the movie many times in the early 2000s. But the humor still works great for me today. At the same time, I also like that Kevin Smith has evolved a bit as a director here. His religious commentary isn't exactly subtle, but it goes deeper than almost anything in his previous films. At the same time, the cast delivers in "Dogma." Jay and Silent Bob are always a highlight anyway, and here they get more screen time than ever before. Otherwise, Alan Rickman is great, as is the dream duo of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Even though "Dogma" is certainly not a masterpiece cinematically, it remains one of my personal favorites. In any case, it's Smith's film from the '90s that has aged best. Clearly, a maturation process had begun with him by that point.

Great movie. Unfortunately, it's hard to find lately since Harvey Weinstein owns the rights and refuses to put it on streaming platforms. Even physical copies are now out of print and super expensive on secondary markets.

Technically speaking, it's one of Smith's better films. The religious "criticism" seems almost quaint now, and I find it a bit difficult to believe it was really all that controversial except among the vocal busybodies over at the Catholic League. Upon rewatching it, I can't help but think this one is a tad bit overrated in Smith's filmography, but I still enjoyed it thoroughly.

Kevin Smith's unflinching onslaught upon organized religion that masks its intentions under the guise of an over-indulgent, goofy stoner road trip. Although he's chewing on some very thick meat in this one, a weighty, opinionated take on a touchy subject isn't quite enough to compensate for the sheer volume of quirks and trademarks the writer/director once again puts up on display.

Every on-screen character speaks in long, unbroken monologues; basically mouthpieces for Smith himself. Jay and Silent Bob, the inessential links to Smith's earlier films, feel shoehorned into a plot that would've worked just as well (if not better) without them. Punchlines are virtually spelled out along the bottom of the screen, or glaringly in the backgrounds. It's a pity, because the film does have some valid points about the shortcomings of organized religion and the evolution of spirituality - particularly Catholicism - but amidst so much sinewy excess that central message is nearly clouded beyond interpretation.

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, still fresh from the success of Good Will Hunting, turn in strong performances as ignorant fallen angels but ultimately there’s little for them to work with.

Kevin Smith's religious epic Dogma is a fun and entertaining film that's irreverently hilarious. When two cast out angels discover a loophole that will allow them to re-enter Heaven a disillusioned Catholic is called upon to stop them. An impressive cast has been assembled, and includes Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Alan Rickman, George Carlin, and Chris Rock. Additionally, Smith's writing is pretty sharp, with some witty dialog and clever humor. However, his directing is still rather weak, and the editing is sloppy. Dogma is Kevin Smith's most ambition film yet, and despite the rough edges he succeeds at delivering an incredibly funny adventure.

Don't watch that movie if you are very religious. Really funny
