Dr. Jack & Mr. Nicholson is a documentary that looks into one of Hollywood's greatest and my personal favourite actor, Jack Nicholson. A retrospective look at the man who didn't quite fit in, who left New Jersey to get involved in movie pictures, who would go on to win 3 Academy Awards, as well as write and direct films.

Jack Nicholson is such a unique, character that has been associated with success in Hollywood, both on and off the screen. This documentary dives into how Nicholson forged a unique pathway for himself across decades where he opened himself in different, layered (often maniacal) performances and how Hollywood came to not just accept him, but revere him.

A few negatives with this documentary - the runtime. At roughly 50 minutes, this had enough juice and stories in it to extend for half an hour without feeling bloated or padded. The relationship with Anjelica Houston, towards the end of the relationship was rushed. The character of Jack at nighttime was referenced but I wanted more insight into the craziness that took place in Jack's world. And the 90s and 00s are rushed over. Lastly, the talking heads didn't add too much for me, and were probably my least favourite part of this documentary.

It's short and to the point, doesn't overstay it's welcome and achieves the basics. Because of how interesting the subject matter is, I can't fault it. But this is one of those cases where I wanted more.
