Tram driver Lauri loses his job. Shortly later, the restaurant where his wife Ilona works as a headwaitress is closed. Too proud, to receive money from the social welfare system, they hardly try to find new jobs. But they are completely unlucky and clumsy, one disaster is followed by the next. Finally, their courage, confidence, and their unbreakable love triumph over the fate.

Everything is horrible forever… it’s another Kaurismäki flick, yay! An extra depressing one, but kinda hopeful still, as you might have guessed. Yet another ultra-bleak drama (or pitch black comedy? As with many of his films, i’m not quite sure…) about very average people carrying on in the face of suffocating circumstances. Business as usual for Kaurismäki, you might say. Much of the plot will later be recycled for his most recent (and IMHO stronger, more balanced) film, The Other Side Of Hope. Good, not great, this one.

The Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki has made several films about the "little people" in society, hardworking folk who have a spot of bad luck and risk being overlooked by the state bureaucracy and business development schemes that are ostensibly there to help them.
