Trivia: The girl kissed by Elliott in the classroom scene is none other than former playmate and baywatch star Erika Eleniak!

Watched with my wife, the 7th grader, and the kindergartner. I only kind of half watched... It's been a long week. I really wanted to check out my youngest's reactions.

Watching this with my 5 y.o. involved answering a lot of questions, but she LOVED it: wide eyed amazement, tears at the appropriate places, and shouts of "YEAH!!!" during the bike scenes.

Some of the animatronics are definitely dated, but it's weird seeing these older movies with kids so used to everything being CGI... Even my 7th grader said that some scenes seemed really realistic, which surprised me.

Spielberg's most personal film and probably his best. This has stood the test of time and remains a classic film. There are not as many of Spielberg's directorial flourishes here but the decision to shoot from the POV of the children is inspired and certain shots stay with you - the silhouette of the bike passing by the moon of course is now iconic. John Williams at this stage of his career was rolling out classic scores one after the other and here he creates a piece of music so good, Spielberg decided to edit the final sequence to the music. But it's the children and their performances that make or break this film and while the core trio are all very good, Henry Thomas delivers probably the greatest performance by a child actor to date, completely sells the relationship between Elliott and ET, and provides the emotional backbone to the film that makes it so appealing.

Great movie. Loved seeing it from the kids perspective and good performances. More iconic music from John Williams. Knowing a little bit about Spielberg and how personable this film is to him makes it even better.

E.T. is classic Spielberg. However, the film does drag in the second half. The story is nice, but I can't help feeling that it needs greater tension.

This is a fun movie. I don't know if i saw it as a kid or not, i dont remember that far back, but i enjoyed this. The practical effects really added to the experience and the kid actors were great. Drew Barrymore has always been incredible, i love her

_E.T._ is a classic 80's movie with a memorable story. The plot is original and ahead of its time, exploring themes of friendship, acceptance, and the wonders of the unknown. The special effects, while now considered somewhat dated, were innovative for their time and add to the charm of the film. _E.T._ is a must-see for fans of 80's movies.

that kid kissing the girl was dumb and out of place... very slow start.. could have been good in 1982 but in 2023 a big no

No other movie has ever made me feel so many emotions. From the amazing story, the memorable characters, to the brilliant score by John Williams, E.T. is a cinematic classic and will forever be regarded as one of Spielberg's greatest films.

I FILM DI FANTASCIENZA CHE HANNO SEGNATO L'IMMAGINARIO COLLETTIVO
"Telefono casa". Il 7 dicembre 1982, l'alieno amichevole sbarcava nelle sale. Con il muso occhiuto disegnato da Carlo Rambaldi e un cuore tutto spielberghiano.

Blockbuster from the 80s, that more blockbuster than this is almost impossible to find. A triumph of americanity and silliness, with the typical tear-inducing Hollywoodian soundtrack, the usual portait of children (especially males) extremely childish and dependent from the parents and the educators but who are able to "save the world", as well as the wizard showing impressive thaumaturgical powers, all these while the adult and the institutions have no clue whatsoever and seem baffled.
I really could not digest this, and I wonder if there are still people who like it outside the nostalgia effect.

The first time I watched “E.T.” I was a little too young and got traumatized by the scenes with him getting sick. Even by rewatching it, I have to say the overall tone is quite atypical for a kids movie. Especially in the first half, the pacing is relatively slow and atmospheric, relying on suggestive images rather than spelling out everything to the viewer. An excellent example of a movie with a potentially mediocre script that earned a billion points for finding the right director.

The only scenes that I would have left out are the kiss and the moment Elliott’s house gets surrounded by the guys in space suits. They both felt like they belong to a different movie. We also have the adults being dumb for the whole time, but that’s a classic trope from kids narrative. Actually, I was impressed that instead of the classic movie villains, we only got normal scientists who cared for their research a little too much.

Saw the 40th anniversary version today. It was sooooo good. I'm glad it wasn't a remastered version of the 20th, given how crap some of the effects are in that one.

3 Thoughts After Re-Watching ‘E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial’:

1. I just watched this film, one that defined my childhood, for the very first time in a theater — and it was as epic and tender as ever. Iconic in every way. Absolutely magical. And the feels are unbelievably still very, very real. Spielberg at his supremely best.

2. THAT SCORE. The sound of it brings tears to my eyes and truly reminds us what films can conjure. John Williams is a singular genius. Again, iconic.

3. It’s a consistent takeaway from the film, so I’d be remiss not to acknowledge it: Can Drew Barrymore be anymore adorable? When Gertie cries, I cry.
