I couldn't get fully lost if the idealism of it all but I appreciated it. Just the thought that this movie and the hippies were very much real at one time is interesting but the story itself did nothing for me. A slice of time and culture that some will love.

I didn't really like it that much. I thought the music while riding was great. The editing was a little jarring at first but it kinda grew on me. It was way to slow. The story and themes were boring to me and the ending was bad. Jack Nicholson is great as always.

Some movies age well, and some don’t. This is the latter.
I know it defined a generation and all of that, but it kinda fails with the basics if you ask me.
It looks and sounds nice, but the characters, themes and story are boring and flat.
It’s hard to believe that a lot of Hitchcock’s classics were made before this, because some of the editing and directing choices are so amateurish.
It’s very concerned with being a product of its time, and that’s fine, but becoming dated is always a possible drawback of that, especially when it isn’t attempting to be artistic or deep.
Even when keeping the cultural climate of the time in the back of my mind, I think it falls well below the mark.
Some of its qualities should be acknowledged, but this is so clearly a film that’s going to lose more of its value with every new generation.

4.5/10

This movie is just ok for me. The story was almost non existent but it does give us a view into hippie culture of the 60’s . It was amusing watching Hopper blitzed. Great performance by Nicholson.

Billy: What the hell is wrong with freedom? That's what it's all about.
George Hanson: Oh, yeah, that's right. That's what's it's all about, all right. But talkin' about it and bein' it, that's two different things. I mean, it's real hard to be free when you are bought and sold in the marketplace. Of course, don't ever tell anybody that they're not free, 'cause then they're gonna get real busy killin' and maimin' to prove to you that they are. Oh, yeah, they're gonna talk to you, and talk to you, and talk to you about individual freedom. But they see a free individual, it's gonna scare 'em.
Billy: Well, it don't make 'em runnin' scared.
George Hanson: No, it makes 'em dangerous. Buh, neh! Neh! Neh! Neh! Swamp!

It is a very unique film, from the direction to the pure subject matter of the entire film. It was a first of it's kind, that boasted three of Hollywood's greats. Along with a timeless soundtrack, it is a perfect ride through the subculture of the 1960's United States. The true definition of a classic movie.
