Enter the Void is not a film set out to entertain nor make you feel at ease with yourself and your surroundings. It has quite revolting and daunting imagery; the cinematography feeling nothing other than bizarre, fantastical, perverted and ominous. It’s a shock! Definitely an extreme replica of a psychedelic trip. You never get a break from feeling uncomfortable staring at this “life after death” theme occurring right before your eyes. But did I enjoy the film? First of, Gaspar Noé is an incredible director often challenging what film is set out to be; creating remarkable twists to his work quite often. Enter the Void definitely felt like a drug experience: it’s not a film set out to be listened to and watched but felt much more like music is supposed to be felt through your body too, impacting your emotions. It’s never just about the listening. It’s a physical and emotional experience. I gotta say though quite intelligent, really making me feel that impact psychedelic drugs can take on you, this film was quite a stretch making it at times extremely dull to watch. I recommend anyone who is questioning watching this to do so, yes, please. However don’t go into it expecting to be entertained. I almost feel like this is a film that could be put out at an art exhibition, having its audio play as we look around the room of the other arts would be really interesting to me. Watching the entire thing put together for 3 hours is a bit too much for me to rewatch. But it definitely is in a way very amazing cinema. Just a different kind of amazing.
