Getting an invitation for a Marvel early screening was meant to be something great in the past. Sadly, I've just got it for this stinker of a movie, and lost two hours of my life. I'm a fan of Josh Trank's Chronicle, so I kept my hopes high, but not much so, as he's a competent filmmaker but more in tone with an indie vibe rather than a blockbuster, in my opinion. I'm so disappointed regarding this movie that I can resume the entire plot in the following few lines: a couple of kids (one a mild-mannered-mad-scientist-in-the-making and an honest-to-God-sports-jock) try for nearly a decade to create a functioning prototype of a phase-quantum-dimensional-shifting device (a teleportation machine, for the layman), getting the attention of a gifted scientist (who happens to have a politically correct bi-racial family) from a government-funded think-tank. Together, they spend HALF (yes, half) the movie trying to make the prototype of the device (now named "Quantum Gate") fully functional and open a portal to Planet Zero (a desolate generic CGI dimension that co-exist with ours), with the unwilling aid of Victor, a hacker-wiz kid who happens to be sadly in love with the only female character in the film, who in turn has a crush for Reed (as you might expect, Reed is utterly oblivious to her most of the film). The whole ordeal feels detached, procedural and boring, but has the very brief quality of portraying them as humans, with flaws. Anyway, as expected (because bad things do happen when you rush experiments), their visit to Planet Zero goes awry when Victor tries (as any scientist might) take a sample. The portal collapses, and Victor is left behind. I must dearly advise to you: it follows one of the most disturbing, un-glamours and painful transformation scenes I've ever seen in a Marvel movie. Their DNA is changed and they have odd molecular-phasing side-effects that can be characterised as "super powers". A great deal of the rest of the film is spent trying to - ironically - reverse the molecular-phasing disease, and we get to see a few neat scenes, while one of them is remorseful and contrite (hiding in South America) and the others begin to use their abilities to become military assets. This goes for a while until out of the blue, Victor (quite understandably bitter with them) decides to destroy our Earth using the Planet Zero portal. He's so good at it that he gets to almost destroy Earth without any complicated laboratory or technology. Then it comes the 10 minute studio-mandated battle where the characters become reluctant heroes (honestly, Reed a melee expert?) and obviously defeat Victor, who "disintegrates" (I don't believe that at all) while the portal finally collapses. After those 10 minutes of low quality CGI extravaganza, they get fully funded by the US Military, and decide to use their side-effects to protect humankind, while searching a cure for their disease (unlike the X-Men and most Marvel characters, the FF have always been in good terms with the US Government and NY authorities). In the end, I was baffled that there was not a single ounce of wonder or enjoyment from their part in their abilities, and that the characters feel underdeveloped, to the point of being hollow jokes compared to their comic book counterparts (especially the latest incarnation). With the exception of Michael B. Jordan and Red E. Cathey, the rest of the cast is AWFUL, their dialogues becoming wholly interchangeable. Really. Write down snippets from the dialogue, and any of the characters can deliver those lines. It's that bad. I'm sure I'll never watch this movie again, and I do hope the sequel never gets made. By the way: this movie isn't part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a good reason.

The alterations too were poorly scripted, I was sat watching Ben seemingly accept his fate without any self pity or anger towards his okish comrades (ie they have retained their human forms). His only anger is for Reed leaving the facility.<br /> <br /> Storm has a 5 second fit of being on fire then again yeah it's all good. Has a suit that helps control his fireball transformation (why hasn't Ben got a suit that can control his ability???)<br /> <br /> You don't feel any connection to these characters and don't care for their plight. As for Victor Von Doom. No real reasoning behind why he wants to destroy earth. Doom is seriously under utilised in this film, the teacher from the beginning of the film gained more animosity than Doom could muster.<br /> <br />

Exactly. After every Marvel premiere, I'm usually excited and already waiting for the next movie. With FF, I was wondering if this debacle would work best as a TV-mini series, slicing it into 4 episodes and adding the missing plot points (apparently there's enough footage for a 4 hours version if needed) and fixing the awful CGI work they did here. As you say, Doom was more like the villain of the week this time. A friend just got the Blu-ray and says there is not a real behind-the scenes, just some vanilla interviews (most likely recorded before the premiere), and (surprise) no comments track. Hope they revert the rights to Marvel someday. Oh, by the way... the Blu-ray here in Mexico is around $7.00 US Dlls, and you get the digital copy, a DVD and a t-shirt. Odd has hell.

Incredibly odd, I would expect something like that from an anniversary edition. The concept could be good but was just poorly executed. It was almost like they forgot what movie they were making and yes I agree it would have been more suited to a tv show, though still wouldn't be anywhere close to Agents of Shield, unfortunately I still have to watch Agent Carter and Jessica Jones (I think that's the name).<br /> <br /> I rarely purchase a Blu-Ray or DVD if its lightweight, it has to be a favourite movie for me to do that. I certainly won't be purchasing this (even if they produced a Lord of Rings style Extended Edition)

Yep, right there with you on the buying. Usually I wait around this month to get my Blu-rays, and just like you, only favorites or excellent movies that have something unusual. I'm quite sure that I won't buy this movie or watch it ever again. It's sad... so much potential and expectation, wasted.

Here is the main reason Ultimate Fantastic Four was not a good basis for the new move "Reed's abilities allow him to stretch his brain in order to accommodate and solve almost any problem thus making him effectively a human computer."

WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even if that was possible why would stretching your brain make you smarter?

Replacing FF's Origin with Quantum Teleportation is as bad as when TMNT were going to be Aliens. Also "It's clobbering time" holy crap this is used for no reason by Ben's "brother"/ fellow orphan. The Teacher/Judge is a joke of a character; how is a machine that makes something disappear and reappear not science? He is just there to (in a badly executed way) put Reed down to have Dr. Storm finally bring him up. Victor von Doom is already evil/anarchistic maybe? Johnny totals his car (that he built from scratch; does he mean modded) and dad wont give it back (maybe pay to have it fixed). Horrible premise to have Johnny join the project. So their first organic test is chimpanzees? Polarized sunglasses to block the high intensity flash? Both of those seem totally legit. For how futuristic they made it they have 1950 style space suits? They try to explain their mutations with fire, brown rocks (but he turns orange) , blue light/radiation and Reed stretches right after being exposed (maybe that did it). They are in the middle of New York and no one else is effected so apparently only they were exposed to enough radiation? They get taken to one of those secure facilities that people can easily escape from (that are all over movies and TV). Reed was bouncing old emails accounts off satellites!?!?!?!?!?! What are the emails for? Reed made a high-grade suit that helps control his abilities in a Jungle workshop? Johnny said listening to Dr. Storm caused him to become what he is now but, that is wrong, It all happened after listening to Victor (unless he is blaming being part of the project as why he became the Human Torch). Why did they send non exposed people (maybe this is Dr. Allen trying to get more powered people)? They do not give any basis for Doom's flawed sense of Justice; he just says Dr. Allen shouldn't have the power (this is right for the original character but he is only shown as a jerk in the movie). So did he create a black whole or a portal beam thing (I say it is a gravity well). Where and why (in this story) does he get the cloak? So basically Reed, Sue and Johnny can't control their powers without the suits until they finally need to defeat Doom. Movie assumption based on movie assumption; he made the portal thing and they are linked so he needs to be defeated before it will close? "It's Clobbering time" used in a different context and no real basis why Ben would say it. Also base at the end is an FU to Marvel's Avenger Base and New York's Baxter Building.

The wiki describes 35 minutes of the movie in 2 sentences and that includes everything interesting that happens (what would normally be a 5 minute or less montage). AND THEN the origin story actually starts and takes 30 more minutes till the second act starts. They just tag on Sue having force field powers (maybe invisibility and force fields are both supposed to be psionic?)

multiple continuity errors. Sue almost puts earbud back in then decides to keep talking and doesn't; a few seconds later it is in her ear between cuts.

Hopefully the sequel goes the way of Green Lantern 2 or Amazing Spiderman 3.

I honestly can't believe I'm going to say this. I never thought the day will come when I say that "Batman & Robin" is no longer the worse superhero movie ever made after seeing this movie, but the difference between the two is that at least Batman & Robin was fun to watch and wasn't depressing and dull that Fant4stic was.

The story is about a contemporary take on the classic super-hero team - four young scientist are involved in an experiment where they find themselves teleported to another dimension. When they return, they find themselves gifted with unique powers - ones they will have use to stop an evil rising to power.

It's been 10 years now since the 2005 "Fantastic Four" was first release. Looking back on that film is like looking back on a bad memory that you wish will fade away. The 2005 movie wasn't all that good, but to me it wasn't on the same level as Batman & Robin as some people think. Rise of the Sliver Surfer was the squeal that nobody asked for but they made anywhere because...well I don't know they just did. The squeal wasn't all that great just like the first movie, but the movie itself wasn't like the worse thing ever as some people have make it out to be. I'm not going to talk about the 1994 movie, because already did a review for it. So check it out.

Now here's 20th Century Fox fourth attempt of making a Fantastic Four movie. We got a new director and a new cast to start off fresh and try to make a new franchise. Many people didn't react very well to the news of a reboot and people got even more mad at the new cast and the fact that they young and Michael B. Jordan was cast as Johnny Storm. I felt like I was the only one giving this movie a chance, as I believed that Josh Trank will make a great Fantastic Four movie and make us forget about the other ones and Trank is a good director. But it's not until I sawed the movie myself and my jaw was on the floor and it's not because the movie was amazing, but how god awful this movie was. "Fantastic Four" (or best known as Fant4stic from the posters) is one of the worst superhero movies of the year and of all time.

I heard a lot of bad things coming from director Josh Trank. Some people who worked with him have openly said that he was awkward to work with and at one point came on set intoxicated while filming a scene. The problems that happened behind the scenes really do show in this movie, as I could tell some of the re shoots with Kate Mara hair keeps changing color in a couple of scenes. I blame the studious for changing a lot of things and making it a living hell for the director and the cast. Josh Trank is best known for directing the 2012 film "Chronicle" and that movie was a smallish movie that Trank had a lot of freedom to work on with and at least there wasn't any studious coming in and changing things and making it really hard for everyone else. It's very clearly that Josh Trank wasn't ready for something big like this and he was originally suppose to direct the upcoming Star Wars sequels, but dropped out because he couldn't do it.

The biggest opportunity that was wasted was the cast. They didn't do a terrible job as their characters but they didn't do anything special. That's a real shame, because these are great actors that had nothing to do in this movie.

The visual effects in this movie are probably some of the worst looking effects I've seen since the early 90's and it's quite shocking that this movie with a lot of money behind it and have such awful looking effects. The CGI used on The Thing was completely hideous and I kind of miss the 2005 Thing a little bit. Some people may like the CGI used on The Thing but I didn't. There's a shot in the movie where Reed Richards (after he gets he's super powers) stretches his face to look like someone else to be in disguise, but when he puts his normal face back to normal and the CGI used in that one shot looked laughably bad. There wasn't a single shot in this movie that didn't even look convincing.

Now lets talk about Dr. Doom in this movie or I like to call him Mr. Freeze #no. 2, because Dr. Doom is this movie was a complete joke and he wasn't in the movie that much, as he just turned up towards the end of the movie. Dooms motivation in this movie was pretty random and wasn't well written at all. Before Victor turns into 'Doom' the only character development that we got from his character is that he thinks he's smarter than ever one else and he just hates people...WHAT?! The way Dr. Doom looks like that robot from Superman 3, but if you put a black bin bag around it and set it on fire, then let it dry out a bit, then you add some Christmas lights around it and now you got Dr. Doom. The final battle scene with Doom and The Fantastic Four is only five minutes long, and yes, I actually did time to see how long it was and it was short.

Watching this movie from beginning till end is like watching one of those MTV parody skits that's funny because of how bad it is, but also being self ware. This movie takes itself way too seriously and tries to be all dark and gritty. At least the other two Fantastic Four movies had a sense of fun and adventure to it if you compared it to this dull flick.

Overall rating: Fant4stic is a depressing, grim, poorly cast movie that's no fun to watch. I rather watch "Batman & Robin" than this movie ever again. I mean, at least that movie doesn't take itself too seriously.

Why is there so much hatred for this version of the "Fantastic Four"? I watched it and failed to see why all the venom exists. Wait, no. I watched it TWICE and still don't understand. I think this a prime example of the echo chamber that is the Internet.

I liked this origin story and the relationship between a young Reed and little Ben. The second act of the movie lacks a big action scene, instead it's replaced by the event in which the characters are transformed into their altered states. The aftermath of that transformation is truly horrifying for all of them. I was actually moved by the terror that each of them must have felt. How do you sedate a man on fire? Or a woman who sees herself fade in and out of existence? Um...or a guy who finds he's made of stone? And it gets worse...the military wants to weaponize them. Not exactly caring nurturers.

The run time of the movie is short so there's not a ton of time to learn about the characters. The truncated duration also makes a long, drawn out final action set-piece impossible. Then again, everyone bitches if a movie is over two hours long. "It's too long!" "It's too short!" Geez. Filmmakers, pick your poison. We've got TV series that drag on and on and on for multiple seasons. Viewers end up knowing the characters better than they know their own family. I'm quite certain that most people can't handle a short story, movie-style anymore. If they don't know what a character's favorite food is or the color of their underwear, they can't relate. Seriously, how much more do you need to know about the characters of "The Walking Dead"?!?

This is a rather dark edition of the Fantastic Four. I don't think it holds true to the initial creation of the superhero team. Dr. Doom is a different version of the team's primary archenemy, too. But since when has an alternate interpretation of something been forbidden?

It's too bad the effects aren't uniformly better. Some of the scenes look a little short detail-wise and for every crappy shot of The Human Torch, there's a well done sequence of The Thing.

No, I don't think this is a terrific superhero movie, but it's not one of the worst. It doesn't deserve all of the hate.

> Too slow and dramatised superhero flick, but acceptable.

I can't say I liked the previous films and not this one. In fact, I kind of enjoyed watching this reboot. It was much better than what I have heard about it. At least it did not sound like a loud and lousy like any modern sci-fi flicks, chasing bad guys, bombing cities and downing buildings. But as a superhero and sci-fi film, it had its moment, only at the end.

Obviously the film was too slow and dramatisation was a backslash keeping the youngsters (audience) in mind. I actually expected hefty stunt sequences. Without actions, a superhero movie is like a limbless spider and toothless shark. If the web and tooth are the superpowers, then they must handle it quite smartly. So that is where this film failed to be a clever. This film had 4 superheroes and until the climax they were impotent. Which means the only superhero movie in the recent time that meant for older people. Precisely to say, if you are a 30+, you might enjoy it as I did. I know I can't talk for you and what kind of movies you like, but I know todays youngsters who refuse dramas and accept action-adventures.

I agree it did not deliver as it should have been as a theatrical feature where surround speakers are ready to give us a breathtaking sound mix. I felt it some kind of a television episode. Because that is how the modern television series are presented. Personally, I would like to say that don't mind my words and the review, because I usually enjoy all the films I watch. So this one was average to me, but definitely not a bad and I won't slam it. Though I recommend it for old people who does not like modern high-octane stunts.
