The old crew is back, but not the entertainment factor. I certainly had fun with the fourth installment of the franchise. There are some nice action sequences, and I do like the characters for sure. Furthermore, the foundation for the further development of the series is laid here, which I like a lot more. After all, one thing becomes clear to me every time I watch this film: the "Fast & Furious" series was in dire need of a facelift at this point. And fortunately, it got that with "Fast Five".

They seem to be improving as I go through the series. At least someone gave Paul more direction for his character instead of just smiling and looking at the camera like an idiot in the 1st two. A little more substance. Plus the filming of the car scenes are also improving with less cheesy effects.

The OGs (Diesel, Walker and Rodriguez) are back and that's awesome but somehow this feels... lifeless. The problem with it is it takes itself too seriously and it's devoid of any kind of fun. Mix that with some flat drama and reduced action sequences and you've got something truly boring. I forgot this was a car movie for a while. One thing it does that the previous ones didn't though is do a tiny bit of character buildup and progression.

While it may not be the strongest entry in the series, it's still an enjoyable action-packed movie that delivers on the thrills and excitement that fans have come to expect from the franchise. The car chases, explosions, and fight scenes are all top-notch and well-executed, providing plenty of action. One of the strengths of the film is the return of the original cast members, including Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, and Michelle Rodriguez, who all deliver solid performances. While the story may not be the most complex or original, it still manages to hold your attention and keep you engaged throughout.

Japanese title: Wild Speed MAX.
This is the one that sees the original cast reuniting after eight years to let us forget the goofiness of the second movie and the box office bomb of the third. This is the real start of the Toretto “family” saga, with Dom overshadowing Brian with his superhero powers and detective skills. The action scenes are starting to lose control, but they are not amusing enough to justify us going through minutes of unneeded brooding drama written by a junior high school student. It takes itself so seriously that it gets hard to swallow. Toretto sliding with his car under a flaming tank as it rolls over its head only seven minutes from the beginning boasted my expectations, but unfortunately, that scene is followed by the longest 100 minutes of my life.

Actual score: 3 1/2
Guilty pleasure score: 5 with sparse 6 1/2 moments
Final score: 4

A great 4th film (3rd in chronological) to get back to the original timeline, and what a great way to continue, as Brian is now back in LA as a reinstated cop and Dom comes out of hiding to come home for a personal reason and the two of course end up together again, but this time chasing after the same guy, which unfortunately leads to a similar ending to #1 but with a big twist that turns this saga from potentially ending to a potential of a whole lot more movies. The plot development is well done and the sentimental stuff is brought back and its nice because you get to know Dom a bit better and of course the action is great.

Like a nice chat with the person in front of you in line at the supermarket: yeah, it's a slog but at least the stories are good.

The idea that Brian and Dom infiltrate a gang for opposite reasons (arrest & murder) helps to make this exercise in dubious acting and routine stunt driving a little more palatable than the previous 3 franchise entries.

The reason why this one sucks compared to the ones following it is simple: it takes itself seriously.
The filmmakers were still treating the franchise with dignity at this point, which is a bad idea, as these films are inherently shlocky and written like soap operas.
It looks quite nice, and there are some decent set pieces, but it’s all too grounded to be entertaining.
You can just tell that these movies work better when they’re heightened.

3.5/10

First of all, this film did two things right: it brought back the original cast and it completely ignored that there ever was a sequel. This has everything I liked about the original, great action, great heart and it was wonderful to have Vin Diesel back in the driver’s seat. The logic of the plot was a little fuzzy but overall, I really enjoyed it. I return my rating of the franchise to an 8 (great) out of 10. [Action Drama]

Ranking these Fast and Furious movies.

"Still a buster"

Fast & Furious is still as weak as the first time I saw it. Maybe even weaker because back then, I didn't know how over the top and how it is more about just being a fun film in the ones that followed.

Fast & Furious is about Dom (Vin Diesel) trying to get revenge for Letta (Michelle Rodriguez) being murdered. Dom has a new special video game power in which he can reconstruct vehicle crashes in his head. Handy little tool! Brian (Paul Walker) now works for the FBI and want to arrest the same criminal as Dom wants to murder so you get the gist of the story.

Anyway you are getting chases through tunnels which is just dull, not many one-liners, we get some action and luckily most of the original cast is here. But still Justin Lin completely blew it here. But lucky for us, the franchise didn't die here!

So yeah, if you want to skip one installment of the Fast Franchise, I would say skip this one.

This is better since Vin Diesel is back and they are trying to do more action but it's not quite there yet.

An explosive action film, Fast & Furious returns the series to its roots. Fugitive Dominic Toretto seeks to avenge his former girlfriend Letty after she's killed while working undercover with newly reinstated FBI agent Brian O'Conner to take down a drug smuggler. The original cast returns and gives some very strong performances. The writing's also fairly good, and does an impressive job at developing the characters and at crafting a compelling story arc. And as usual, the action's especially well-done and is full of exciting, dynamic chase sequences. Fast & Furious is an intense thrill ride that breathes new life into the franchise.

If your expecting much from anything other than the cars then it's a disappointment, but thanks to Justin Lin this has all the makings of a really thrilling action movie, making this fourth flick in the series a little bit better than its predecessors and a lot of fun.

Ever since The Fast and the Furious came out in 2001, Fast & Furious was the sequel I was hoping for. With four of the main cast members from the original film back Fast & Furious was just as entertaining as the first and better than 2 Fast 2 Furious and Tokyo Drift. Fast & Furious geared down on the usual street racing the franchise was built on and instead focused on a darker and compelling story line than previous films in the series. The lack of racing in involved in this film sucked but overall I can appreciate the change in format. The acting was stepped up a bit and while there were less street racing involved, there were plenty of action to go around. This shift in format brought new life for future sequels in the franchise to come.
