Good but not the film to watch. The value of this film lies in the incomparable archival footage captured by the Kraffts. However, the filmmaker presents a very one-sided portrait of the couple, leaving important aspects ignored. This is why Werner Herzog’s film, released around the same time, is infinitely superior. (I’ll comment on it in its own entry.) This film is also severely marred by the narration, both the text, which is insipid, saccharine, and often laughingly exaggerated in tone, and its reading by Miranda July, whose breathy monotone soon grates and should put an end to any voice-over career she might have thought of pursuing.

Excellent movie, probably the best documentary of 2022. The technical level of the film is excellent and the cinematographic references are exceptional. The only criticism I have is that the film loses strength in the main final act due to its exposition.
:crazy_face:Everyone already knows that they love themselves and science lol

[DOK.fest '22] A beautiful, spectacular and passionate love letter to science, through the images filmed by two lovers, the volcanologists Maurice and Katia Krafft. But the strength of the film is its condition of narration in which the tragedy always underlies, the one towards the scientists seemed to be heading without fear. There is an extraordinary editing with the material filmed and an outstanding use of music.

Gourgeous pictures, interesting story, but overall a drowsy documentary, I would have preferred it in two parts for the telly.

Beautiful footage coupled with a beautiful love, the narration is a bit cumbersome and the music cues maybe too manipulative, those aspects pulled me out a bit.

This film about volcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft has everything I look for in a documentary. Stunning images of a fascinating subject are shown. At the same time, the protagonists are compelling. Furthermore, "Fire of Love" tells a coherent story. You don't learn much about volcanoes, but that probably wasn't the intention of this work. Instead, viewers are treated to a beautiful love story. The decision to only use archival footage was also the right one. Many recent documentaries with crisp 4K images appear soulless. The footage used here, on the other hand, has its own personality. "Fire of Love" is a thoroughly entertaining film. Images, content, and music work well together. A nomination for an Oscar would not surprise me and would be well-deserved.
