So amazingly done!!! This is not a tipically movie about war, but rather lets us see a terrible time in history trough the lens of a childs eyes.
It really touched me since i went to Cambodia and know their history.
Important movie!

Emotionally powerful and tragic. Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge were monsters.

Not an easy watch, and nor should it be, this is an exceptionally well-realised piece of history as seen through the eyes of a child.

It's always risky to pin a movie on the performances of children, but as I watched First They Killed My Father I kept thinking it was a good choice. I came into the story of a family torn apart in the Cambodian Civil War woefully ignorant to who the sides were or what was going on. Pinning our point of view to a child also oblivious put the focus on the human element. I don't know if the performances were good or the language factor hid it, but I had no qualms. I felt what they were feeling. I also kept thinking that humans suck, so it's definitely not a feel good tale. I found it interesting and a worth while watch.

A film in which the left does not want anyone to study, a regime in which the Khmer Rouge communists in Cambodia do religious persecution, cultural destruction, torture, mass executions and death by starvation (the true facists), I still wonder how it exists psychopaths in Brazilian universities that advocate regimes like this, in my opinion, this movie was to be part of the school curriculum but, as most teachers are communists (unfortunately), note 10 for the film. An emotionally stiring film, that portrays the hopelessness and terror of war and violence. Amazing direction and great performances made for a captivating experience.

It’s a sad story with good performances. Not a masterpiece but it’s still effective.
