I really need to catch up on all of Sergio Leone's films. Until now, I only knew the fantastic "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly", but "For a Few Dollars More" is no less brilliant. Leone had a distinctive style that fit the western genre perfectly. The cinematography is breathtaking, and it contributes massively to the effective buildup of tension. And the film is once again accompanied by a perfect score by Ennio Morricone.

In this type of western, don't expect too many complex characters, but rather an excess of coolness. Leone takes a lot of time at the beginning to introduce all the main characters. Thus, you learn quickly what makes the two bounty hunters at the center of the plot (Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef) tick. Furthermore, the villain El Indio (Gian Maria Volonté) gets to show how inhumane he truly is in his first scene. The scene in which Eastwood and Van Cleef meet in person for the first time ultimately kicks off the second half of the film very effectively, in which the heroes take action together against El Indio and his gang.

The finale is then great, as expected. The tension is released in an atmospheric showdown. Overall, I like "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" perhaps minimally better, but "For a Few Dollars More" is still probably one of the best westerns of all time.
