Starts of good (I liked the change of setting) but it goes downhill once the heroin addiction kicks off.

The original French Connection is a classic, with great pacing, action and acting performances, especially from Hackman, who was far and away the better choice for the role than the other actors considered at the time. But the sequel really drags, and nothing much happens for, what seems like, most of the film. Popeye bickers with the Marseilles police chief, gets kidnapped and strung out on drugs, goes through what seems like an inordinately long recovery period on screen and then eventually closes in on the bad guy. This one could have been cut down to 90 minutes. Also, is it just me, or did Popeye seem like less of an asshole in the first film? He was a real dick here and not sympathetic at all as the "hero."

What a step down from the first film! Interesting and well performed, but action is broken up by what seems to be an eternity of rehab and Popeye is just a horrible human being to be stuck with when he isn't high as a kite to begin with. Merely average.
