A discarded silk top-hat becomes the focus of a struggle between a washed-up stage magician and a group of schoolchildren, after it magically brings a snowman to life. Realizing that newly-living Frosty will melt in spring unless he takes refuge in a colder climate, Frosty and Karen, a young girl who he befriends, stow away on a freight train headed for the north pole. Little do they know that the magician is following them, and he wants his hat back!

Yes, it's a classic. Yes, it is better than the second one. But the animation is cheap as all get out. You can tell there are a lot of moments when you can tell the drawings are only partially animated. The story, while sort of charming, is also kind of dumb. That magician is such a jerk, too. He literally [spoiler]commits **MURDER** on the magical snowman to get back a hat[/spoiler]. Durante's narration is a high point, though.

Rankin/Bass’s Frosty the Snowman is a fun and whimsical Christmas special. Based on the Jack Rollins and Steve Nelson song, the story follows a snowman who’s brought to life by a magician’s magic hat and attempts to make his way north with the help of some children to stop from melting, all the while been pursued by the magician. Jimmy Durante narrates and gives a charming rendition of the song. And the animation style has a quaint simpleness to it, with soft colors and round edges. A timeless classic, Frosty the Snowman continues to delight audiences of all ages.

[3.5/10] This is surprisingly awful. I have fond enough memories of the special from childhood, but there’s just nothing here. The animation is cheap. The voice acting is bad. The story is practically nonexistent. The characters are thinner than a snowflake. The signing is repetitive and dreadful. More

It's pure nostalgia again. It was on television almost every Christmas from 1969 to today. It was a Christmas tradition...

...and now unfortunately it's a tradition that is being copied by a thousand low-rent cartoons that even snatch the cover in their cheap imitations....
