Daniel Day-Lewis really does steal the show. He is the reason you watch this movie. Leonardo DiCaprio is good too. There are some great fight scenes that are really brutal. The movie is too long though and can be boring at some parts. I wish I liked it more because the setting and atmosphere are really cool.

It was a good film. The storyline is predictable from the first 10 minutes and it's a very typical Scorsese film where Leo plays a very typical lead, although his acting is of course flawless. The development of unexpected relationships kind of define the word 'frenemy' in this. The main let down is on how long it is. I feel like not enough happens for the screen time to be as long as it is. That being said, I'm glad I've watched it and such an amazing part of history portrayed so simply, so raw.

I still don't know for sure if I should like this Scorsese flick about the (more or less) real happenings in New York of 1863! What is sure, however, is that this flick is intriguing and brutal.

The best thing about this movie is the atmosphere. It does a great job of taking you to New York 1863. I'm no history buff, so have no idea how accurate it is, but the setting is great and there are some truly great shots in this movie. Bill the Butcher is an exceptionally memorable character as the extreme patriotist, played very well by Day-Lewis. The rest of the cast is just ordinary.

There are two reasons why I didn't like this movie. 1: there is only negativity; in the dark setting, the unlikeable 'hero', the motives of the characters (hate and fear), the fighting all the time, the sad ending, everything. 2: there is no character development, they all stay exactly the same throughout the entire film.
It can be said that these two point were done intentionally by the director, to make people walk away with the sad, empty feeling that bad things will never change, but in my opinion it missed something to make me care about. Now I just shrugged my shoulders and moved on.

What a great movie Daniel Day Lewis as the Butcher, I could watch him all day. He’s so bad ass you’ll love it. Of course as good as he is Cameron Diaz is horrible you’ll catch her accent coming and going. This movie will show you how the Irish immigrants were treated but then when the Italian immigrants came the Irish would kill them to keep them from being able to get jobs, but this movie is more about Daniel Day-Lewis and Leo DiCaprio and their relationship, it’s a great movie

@paezfaexz This film isn't so attractive to me; and I don't love *everything* Leo does (in "Gangs" he seems dull). However I'd hardly call every (or any) of his leads "typical." Leo has had extraordinary range, impeccable precision, and emotional depth in *most* of his varying roles (imo), from "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" to "Catch Me if You Can" to "Django Unchained" to "Basketball Diaries".

I love the work of Martin Scorsese, but this one not so much.
Especially Amsterdam's flashbacks with that strange music jumping in and cutting off rapidly again didn't feel consistent for me.
Also this movie tries to be authentic with the history of New York & the civil war - but on the other hand they make fighting & killing in the streets look like a fun weekend activity.
And what disturbs me the most: I still don't know what they were fighting about!

Anyway the set's & the acting were very convincing.
But I have to say, except for revenge there is no meaning & no development of anything - so I gotta give this one a thumb's down.

What a waste of such an important (hi)story. Spike Lee should've directed.

From Martin Scorsese comes the gritty period crime drama Gangs of New York. After his father is killed in a gang war Amsterdam Vallon is sent to a reformatory, and when he gets out he returns to his old neighborhood in lower Manhattan to find it being run by his father’s killer, a nativist crime lord named Bill the Butcher; who he goes to work for, secretly plotting revenge. Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Cameron Diaz lead the cast and give strong performances; especially Day-Lewis, who does a fantastic job at creating a compelling villain. However, the script is a little unfocused; with subplots about the Civil War and Tammany Hall. Still, some interesting themes are explored, and Scorsese does a good job at building tension and suspense. While it has its weaknesses, Gangs of New York is a captivating film.

Still trying to figure out this movie. Leo and Daniel Day-Lewis are great in this for sure. No argument there. I think there was something in the editing that made it feel a little cheesy, especially with slow-mo moments with rock playing.

Not for me.

Predictable plot, accents were off-putting, casting was wonky, over long.

On the plus, great sets and set dressing.

Got through the first half...barely. When I realized I still had well over an hour to go, I quit. Read the synopsis of the movie and you'll know what's coming without wasting 2.5 hours of your life. I was not impressed by anything or anyone, and it was very difficult to reconcile the emboldened actions of the newly emancipated blacks in this movie. Traditional (read: _authentic_ ) history shows that the newly-freed slaves were still very much in fear for their lives and very much oppressed; they would not have acted in so bold and brazenly a manner among white men as this movie indicates. Hard to take a movie seriously when it can't even portray the most basic societal history accurately. I must say, however, that as an aficionado of fine headgear, I was captivated by the different styles of hats the men wore in this film. That's about the only thing it had going for it...

Too overly long but always faithfully authentic of its time period. A good cast at hand with Daniel Day with the most memorable performance.
