Too many flashbacks and fade wipes, as simple editing tricks would've done the job. The entire movie is totally ridiculous, yet a guilty pleasure of mine. There's a lot of thrilling sequences that kept me interested and also some memorable deaths scenes which stuck with me for years.

But still, I can't believe John Carpenter made this, until I saw 'The Ward'.

This is easily the worst movie set on Mars - or anywhere in a Milky Way!

So…

I don't get all the hatred for Ghosts of Mars. Yes… It's a dumb movie, but just because the premise is rather dumb, doesn't mean it can't be a nice watch. Granted, there are some stilted acting and language here, but that drowns somewhat in the fact that I feel entertained every step of the way.

Is Ghosts of Mars a masterpiece, like most of Carpenters filmography? No, certainly not, but it has its place, and I'll take it out now and then just to annoy the film snobs out there.

Wish I could have seen the Escape from Mars version of the script, but I take what I can get. The Indicator release from Powerhouse Films in the UK is currently the best version I have seen. Well worth the cost!!!

@beardedmovienut Agreed. I always heard it was awful, and sure, it was awful, but I don't think it was much worse than Resident Evil Afterlife (the 2nd movie). It was a decent space zombie action movie with just enough good B-movie sfx gore. I never thought I'd see
Clea Duvall and Pam Grier
lose their heads. In the spirit of Resident Evil, it's kind of a shame we didn't get a cheap sequel with the survivors. They had good enough chemistry.

I think it was just poor timing that it came out the same time as so many other slightly more serious Mars movies. Plus, it still felt more B-action horror movie, but so did some of the Resident Evils.

I agree with Ebert & Roeper, this really isn’t a bad movie. Not Carpenter’s best but fun with a great cast. Carpenter also nailed it with the musical score as usual.

I am not entirely sure what I just watched, but I know some people love this movie. It has a stacked cast and is just so silly. At first I was hating it but by the end I was having fun. Can't believe this came out the same summer that Jason X came out. This is much better than that, but still not great.

From master of horror John Carpenter comes Ghosts of Mars, a terrifying tale set in the depths of space. In a small mining town on Mars a group of criminals and cops must come together when a strange force starts turning people into feral, ravenous creatures bend on death and destruction. The film has an interesting cast that includes Natasha Henstridge, Ice Cube, Jason Statham, and Clea DuVall. But none of the performances are particularly good; though Henstridge manages to command some sage presence. The production values are also mediocre, as all the sets and costumes seem pretty generic and unimpressive. Yet in a campy, B-movie kind of way, Ghosts of Mars manages to be fun and entertaining.

Ridiculous fighting scenes, mediocre acting at best, an uninspired soundtrack and a silly plot make this a really bad action flick. What the fuck happened to John Carpenter?
