There's an interesting layer beneath the emotional and familial relationships. I hope i don't sound too pretentious or that it's all so obvious to others I sound foolish, but I just wanted to share what I took away from it all.

The film is set upon the backdrop of the Cold War as the Cuban Missile Crisis is heating up between the US and Russia, two nations whose dominance upon the world came about at the end of WWII at the same time these two girls were born and overtook the lives of their parents. While the warlike intensity rages in the background, the characters and families pursue the anti-war movements ideas.
It's within this struggle and juxtaposition of political/philosophical ideologies that we witness Rosa pursuing the path of Bohemian pacifism under the romantic lure of Roland while Ginger embraces protest and finally struggles with the notion of taking action. In the face of the the annihilation of his family, Roland argues his case for the dissolution of nuclear family, spurring the mother Natalie to take drastic action.
The actors and pacing are all very engaging as the emotional story unfolds, so it's easy o overlook the various hints of those parallels to the background setting and deeper philosophical perspectives.

Anyway, I thought that framing was really well conceived, written and portrayed. And the cast did a remarkable job fleshing out the world and positions, and just overall felt the direction and cinematography created a wonderful mood.

Very finely acted, but 'Ginger & Rosa' ends up being something that wouldn't look out of place on 'EastEnders'.

I'll start with the positives. The cast are terrific. Elle Fanning (Ginger) and Alice Englert (Rosa) are very good together, both impress. Alessandro Nivola gives a strong performance also. Away from them, I really enjoy how it's all filmed visually.

The plot, meanwhile, isn't the greatest. It builds up fairly nicely, though unfortunately concludes in more soap opera fashion; just against a deafening backdrop of politics and war. It isn't anything particularly bad, I did enjoy it, but it definitely cheapens events a tad; especially as it feels like the filmmakers are aiming for something more deeper in meaning.

I'd still say this is worth a watch, admittedly that's mainly thanks to Fanning & Co.
