Unfortunately, "Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning" didn't work for me at all. I'm also not sure what is supposed to "begin" here, certainly not the basis for the plot of the first two films. Instead, the setting is changed to 1815. Nonetheless, the Fitzgerald sisters remain the two leads (Katherine Isabelle and Emily Perkins). They're probably supposed to be some ancestors, but they're basically the same characters. This decision at least means that we get to see more of Ginger again. That is one of the few pluses.

Overall, the film is extremely dull. The entire plot, which takes place primarily in a trading fort under siege by werewolves, is quite uninspired. The characters are also fairly stereotypical. Isabelle and Perkins are underutilized, despite having shown in the first two films that they were capable of more. There are still a few atmospheric moments in the third "Ginger Snaps" movie, and the effects are at least partially good. However, there isn't much reason for this prequel to exist.

Playing on a re-incarnation theme, Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning explores the root of the werewolf curse. Set in the 1800s, two sisters take shelter at a fort that’s under attacks by a werewolf pack; but when one of the sisters is bitten the other is forced into making a choice that forever alters their destinies. The plot repeats a lot of the same beats as the original, but the wilderness setting is refreshing and allows the series to do some new and interesting things. Unfortunately thought, the film’s storytelling is overshadowed by its politics; which accentuates misogyny and racism in a pretty heavy handed fashion. Yet despite its problems, Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning is entertaining and offers a deeper perspective on the bonds of sisterhood.

The third installment is completely unnecessary. I'm not sure why it exists. It uses the same plot as the original, only this time with higher budget and different setting. The first two works because of the contemporary setting with goth aesthetic and it emphasizes the contrasting personalities between two sisters. This one obviously won't work because it just doesn't make sense. This film is dull, slow and uninteresting. Really disappointing because there are thousand ways this could've been great. The concept falls apart due to underdeveloped idea and ineffective directing. It does very little with its time period. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone. I can see myself liking this if it's a stand-alone film with different title and lead characters.
