I thought that this movie was going to touch on more serious issues because of its title, "Go back to China" which is a line shouted by a white woman in the very beginning of the film, but it was just a guise for a poorly written drama/slice of life. This movie showcases the all-too-common thought process and justifications that Asian-Americans' parents make to manipulate their children, such as guilt-tripping, excuses of filial piety, and verbal abuse, but I feel like it just completely misses the mark because they try to paint the father as a good person despite him
having children with multiple different women and ultimately divorcing all of them to be a sugar daddy to one in the end. Then he thinks he can own and control them all by giving them money. But they all just relish in it.
.

It didn't help that I couldn't stand the main character. I don't know if it was because the acting was bad, or the way she was written, but she is SO entitled and it doesn't feel like she has any character growth or self-reflection skills whatsoever. If anything, she just feels a little bad for what she did and then
runs away back to America after starting shit, basically avoiding any responsibility. Then things only miraculously work out because her friend has an "influencer niece" and they're able to sell all of the toys that way. So it wasn't even a solution of her own accord. Then suddenly the father loves her again because she "saved his company".
The only character I liked and sympathized with was Carol, who, despite being a bit envious, had good reason to be and was mainly well-mannered and had good intentions. She even stands up for Sasha many times. When she
confessed that she was the one who convinced the father to cut Sasha's trust fund, Sasha reacted as if it was the biggest betrayal in the world, when they didn't even really know each other back then. Also, Sasha doesn't even consider the fact that this is the reason she was able to grow as a person and learn about where all that money she spends so lavishly, comes from.

Also, if Carol hadn't gone to America to try and patch things up with Sasha, Sasha probably wouldn't have gone out of her way to do the same, which shows the difference in their maturity levels.
I hardly ever give any 1/10 ratings, or write negative reviews, but I really hated this movie, lol.
