After the 2014 Godzilla film, people demanded a dumb monster movie.
The result is something that joins the ranks of Jurassic World 2, Pacific Rim 2 or Rampage.
Happy now?

Pro's:
- Creature design/VFX.
- The set up for the 3 main human characters (the idea that drives them).

Con's:
- Massively overblown (especially at the end).
- Too much exposition and way too plot driven. Emphasizing the plot is never a good idea when you make a film like this.
- The dialogue in this is awful, and does the actors no favours.
- The characters are hollow shells, and constantly act in unnatural ways. Especially what they did with Vera Farmiga's character felt lazy and not earned.
- It overuses the orange and teal look to a degree where Zack Snyder would be jealous of it.
- If you thought the final season of GoT had a lot of deus ex machina and 'plot armour' moments, just know that you've seen nothing yet.
- The action scenes in this are incoherent and underlit, and therefore hard to follow.

I find it funny that whenever we get one of these, the take away for most always seems to be: too much focus on the humans, not enough on the monsters!
Well, here's the thing: you can't really develop characters like Godzilla or King Kong, so watching them for 2 hours walk through buildings and punching things is going to get dull very fast.
Therefore, you **need** the human focus.
You know which director knows this? Steven Spielberg.
You know which movie knows this? Jurassic Park.
So instead of demanding more shallow elements for the next one, let's maybe ask for the filmmakers to develop the characters for once, and stop focussing on a plot we've seen hundreds of times at this point.

2.5/10

@jordyep You do know Jurassic Park is based on a Crichton novel? Spielberg is a brilliant director, but he didn't use some hidden knowledge to keep the viewer engaged. He had all the groundwork laid out for him as far as story and character buildup go, and only had to trim it and bring it to life.

Agree with the rest of the review, though I still gave it 6/10 because the beasties are fun to watch.

@keldian you’re right, but don’t forget that this movie is also based on source material. Maybe source material that isn’t as good as the Jurassic Park book (I wouldn’t know as I haven’t read either), but we can at least give credit to Spielberg for not dumbing everything down like this movie does.

This was definitely more for Godzilla fans than it was for critics. It was way better than the 2014 film that got Certified Fresh. The film is just badass. Not perfect but....bad ass.
They do over-do the family drama again though. Especially when the family drama makes no sense. Mark Russel (Kyle Chandler) blames Godzilla for the death of his son. He wants all monsters dead.
Mark’s wife Emma (Vera Farmiga) says screw mankind. The monsters will cure the planet of Climate Change. So yeah in another words who cares if anyone else loses family members. Due to her plan to unleash all monsters.
Her daughter Madison (Millie Bobbie Brown) sticks with her. Despite her mom teaming with some bad men with guns. Who kill some nice scientists right in front of her. So yeah, Mark is the sanest one in that family.
Even if there’s too much of the humans and a silly plot. This is the best of the Hollywood Godzilla movies. Critics are just wrong. One even said the Roland Emmerich version is better. What drugs is that critic on ?
The battles are some of the best done of any monster vs monster battle. Unlike the first film this one has a ton of Godzilla history to it. It shows him way more and shows the character great respect.

If you are looking for more monster fighting and less human story in this monster movie sequel, Godzilla: King of the Monsters meets you halfway. King of the Monsters embraces spectacle and vision over a compelling story. Previous complaints about Godzilla (2014), not showing the monsters enough, were heard and fixed in this installment. The special effects are awesome, seeing the monsters clash is visually breath-taking, and the monsters are more on screen. However, this all seems to come at the expense of a well thought out human plot. Humans are depicted on the screen just as much like the previous movie but, the motive for their actions is lacking. The rationale for the opening course of events makes little sense, family relationships are questionable, and the character choices often seem a tool used to move the plot along. Most annoyingly is the troupe father who will do anything at any time to save his family. This installment closely follows the classic monster movie formula which is, show monsters fighting - use humans as a senseless backdrop. If you are a fan of Godzilla movies there are some nice Easter eggs and callbacks to previous movies that you should find pleasing. I would recommend this movie if you like large action blockbusters, monsters, or if you’re, like me, just a fan of Godzilla. In any case, give it a watch!

"Long live... the king."

'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' didn't work for me. Sorry guys. I'm gonna be the odd one to say this, but I thought this was incredibly boring.

I re-watched the 2014 version back in May in preparation for this movie and after five years since I've seen it, it still holds up. The scale felt so grand and the overall experience is so epic. It's a shame the same can't be said for 'King of the Monsters'.

People have complied about the characters in the 2014 version, but nothing compares to these planks of wood. Holy sh*t they are so one note. I honestly couldn't care for the whole family dilemma. At least we had Bryan Cranston that brought an emotional hook in Gareth Edwards movie. Heck, the characters in the original weren't too bad.

The comedy between other characters is painfully unfunny and out of place. The writing is really bad and doesn't help any character development. Logical sense for these characters are non-existing.

The visual effects, sound work, and action scenes were all the main highlights of course. I love the concepts of each monster and how visual effect wizardry brought it to life. During the fights or whenever the monsters are about to clash was a lot of fun.

Everything else....not so much.

Overall rating: Satisfying for some Godzilla fans, but doesn't live up to its predecessor.

A few bits of dialogue that were cut from the final script to varying degrees. And trust me, this barely scratches the surface:

[A]
"I'm pretty sure that we can't trust your daughter to not mess up our plans to kill millions of people. But rather than just be the homicidal maniacs that we are and kill her while her mom is distracted, let's leave her unattended in a room from which she can easily escape because that makes a lot more sense."
"Brilliant! I guess that's why you're the boss, boss."

[B]
"We have been developing a prototype for a new weapon. An oxygen destroyer. It kills oxygen. But not the oxygen in water. It kills all of the oxygen except for THAT oxygen. But it still kills the fish IN the water. Because reasons."

[C]
"Is there any reason why we can't use an unmanned vehicle to take the nuke to Godzilla so that we can then detonate it remotely?"
"Absolutely none whatsoever, but where's the fun in that?"
"But what about Dr. Noble Death?"
"He's always been a drama queen. Let him have his moment."

[D]
"Should we be worried that Godzilla is so radioactive that he's glowing and about to explode and we're only about twenty yards away from him?"
"No, it's a magical radiation that is only effective out to a two-foot radius."
"Well, that's convenient."
"Isn't it, though?"
"What about all of this radioactive asbestos-laden dust that we're inhaling?"
"Geez, would you give it a rest already, Debbie Downer?"
