Technically marvelous but I felt nothing watching this. No thrills, no suspense, nada.

@the_argentinian Typical Yankee B$ too - They didn't guard the convoys. That was left to others, mainly the Royal Canadian Navy and Airforce. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Atlantic

@cinebong Although I agree Dunkirk is also a great movie, I think they are quite different.

And once again the freshly baked, first-time captain is the American Hero saving the day and awing the world against the bad, evil Kriegsmarine, which, as we all know, **only** consisted of sadistic Nazis howling over radio like a delirious drunken man while engaging the enemy. Straight historic facts.

And obviously the captain has a soft spot for the coloured cook Cleveland, who tragically parishes in an attack. Except the fact that the navy didn't allow coloured people on their ships until 1948 while this cheap propaganda piece is set in 1942. Except the Kriegsmarine was known to be the least Nazified service in the German war machine.

Why the directors/writers of cheesy sh*t like this always try to rewrite history, I don't know.

Seriously, watch "Das Boot" or "The Enemy Below". Don't waste your time with this garbage.

@strel0k . Calm down. You're about to burst a blood vessel. Lol! And by the way, 1942 is when blacks were allowed on Navy ships to serve. So the movie at least got that right.

@strel0k pretty inacurate. They even had colored officers in 1944<br /> <br /> https://www.history.navy.mil/our-collections/photography/people---special-topics/african-americans-in-the-navy/african-americans-and-the-navy--wwii.html<br /> <br /> “When the United States entered World War II in December 1941, the Navy's African-American sailors had been limited to serving as Mess Attendants for nearly two decades. However, the pressures of wartime on manpower resources, the good examples of heros like Doris Miller, the willingness of thousands of patriotic men to participate in the war effort plus well-focused political activities gradually forced changes. Though the Navy remained racially segregated in training and in most service units, in 1942 the enlisted rates were opened to all qualified personnel. In 1944, African-Americans' aspirations were further gratified when the Navy commissioned its first-ever officers of their race”

The other side of "Das Boot". Quite enjoyable, not a masterpiece, but a nice movie about the cat & mouse game in the Atlantic between a convoy' its lead destroyer and a pack of U boots, with the cold, the waiting, the tiredness. And Tom Hanks playing Tom Hanks at the helm.

Just a forgettable military movie. It probably would of been better on the big screen than at home.

Being ex-Navy and having sailed the same waters, I can appreciate the difficulty experienced by the captain and crew of the Greyhound; the North Atlantic is a treacherous enough sea even without being fired upon by enemy vessels intent upon ending your life and your ship's service.

No, this was not engaging at all.
I didn't get involved with the characters, not even Tom Hanks.
Didn't find it suspenseful either.
Give me Das Boot anyday.

Great film that keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole runtime. As always superb acting by Tom Hanks and brilliant intense soundtrack.

[Apple TV+] Fighting in the Atlantic. A war movie in which there is no respite. Tom Hanks' script doesn't leave room for much more either. The combat scenes at sea are well directed. No character development. The dramatic arc of the protagonist is null. The other aspects of the film work with correction. A forgettable movie.

Solid movie. Not exceptional, not poor. Just really solid.

It rises and falls on the magnetism and humanity of Tom Hanks. That he wrote the screenplay should be set aside for a moment for unbiased criticism.

The plot is slight. It's got a little bookend story to give it some heart but I found it a little insubstantial - though it was lovely to see Elisabeth Shue back on the silver screen.

The tension and action is excellent for what it is. It drips with CG and this isn't Marvel budgets. But it is very effective for what it is.

It clocks in at 90 minutes and I feel there's about 10 minutes of fat in there. I'd have liked more of the romance/love-story to be fleshed out at the end to make better use of the time.

What goes without saying is that it is a very worthy and honourable dedication to the brave young men who fought during WWII. Amazing courage amidst horrendous situations.

Worthwhile but ultimately slight.
