Like the sound of folk poetry on vinyl, Hallelujah is old, warm and rich.

This fascinating documentary succeeds in exploring the writing, release and ascension of the Cohen classic 'Hallelujah' through the lens of his career.

As someone who admires the man and his writing but not so much his songs, this film was everything I could've hoped for.

With the analysis of how long it took Cohen to write the song, its US release blocked by Columbia Records (who thought it wasn't commercial enough), and a deep dive into the covers (especially the big 3: John Cale, Jeff Buckley and Shrek) the story of the song is tastefully and thoroughly handled.

The film includes many interviews with those closest to him but also famous fans (including Brandi Carlisle and Glenn Hansard), as well as enough footage of the man himself that even casual fans will find something to love in this tribute.
