This movie impressed me a lot, but I think it lacked something to be a great prequel. Even so, I liked it a lot.

Demystifying iconic villains has a long tradition in Hollywood. Yet it hardly ever works. "Hannibal Rising" is no exception. The film's biggest flaw is that it is excruciatingly boring. Moreover, the title character, Hannibal Lecter, does not really develop in a comprehensible way. First, he is a relatively normal kid in bad circumstances, and then, after a time jump, he is the Creepo we all know. As expected, the late Gaspard Ulliel couldn't hold a candle to Anthony Hopkins. You don't learn much about the character Lecter either; in fact, what you do learn is presented in the lamest form imaginable. I have rarely seen such an unnecessary film.

I’m reading older notes on movies as I play review catch up, and the main thing I still remember about this one is just that young Hannibal’s
love interest was constantly being so heavily sexualized, and she was introduced as his aunt for fuck’s sake. They could have managed to make that development between them a bit more shocking.
I tried to look past it, but I really didn’t like that being such a large part of the main plot of a film delving into the earlier years of Hannibal.
While I’m sure he liked indulging in the pleasures of sex from time to time, I just don’t view him as someone who “needs” it and loses control.
I get it, he was much younger, but still. I found it distracting and unnecessary for the story that actually played out. A lot of the story itself was too drawn out. I never quite felt like I was learning about Hannibal’s past, but someone else’s. This prequel isn’t even listed as part of the Hannibal Lecter collection here on Trakt and maybe that’s more suitable.

Quite easily my least favorite of all the Hannibal Lecter films. It is a serviceable slasher, that is gorier than the others in the franchise, but ultimately feels out of place with Anthony Hopkins at the lead.

Rating: 2/5 - 65% - Not Recommended to Everyone

Ugly and incoherent, _Hannibal Rising_ is the Lecter film that nobody wanted. In this prequel a young Hannibal Lecter attending medical school seeks out the war criminals that murdered his sister. The cast is forgettable and their performances are lifeless. The film tries to make Hannibal into a sympathetic character, but does so in the worst possible way; by making all of the other character more despicable and more repugnant than him. Nothing in _Hannibal Rising_ works, and it provides nothing of value to the Lecter saga.

I admit I watched it because of Gaspard Ulliel, furthermore, it is really amazing, well done, interesting, clever.

This is exactly what a prequel should be... engaging, clever, detailed, relevant. The perfect aperitif to the new Hannibal TV series.
