You've heard of "slow burn" movies?.... This was a slow fizzle. The most appeal this movie had was the really bleak atmosphere and setting; there was some good cinematography involved (in spots) but for the most part, consider this an absolute waste of 90 minutes. The movie is Polish (I think) with English subtitles, so I was able to sit through it in its entirety but what a complete waste. I really thought this would be a good film but it just lacked anything and everything to make it worthwhile. The story was hit-or-miss (mostly miss) about monks and ritualistic "exorcisms" (that were actually murders being committed as a part of demon worship) and apart from that, I couldn't tell you anything more other than it was just dumb. I didn't get the ending, but then there was nothing about this movie to really "get" from the very beginning. I wouldn't call this a "bad" movie (I've had my share of those) but this, in all honesty, was just a waste of 90 minutes. There was nothing to this. Just a dull plodding non-story that made no sense and had no explainable conclusion.

A very clever horror, with elements of psychological thriller and the supernatural.
The story is great, with impactful moments, some unexpected, the ending is very good, I was stunned.

I feel like it ended when it started to get interesting. Overall a pretty boring movie. There's barely any dialogues, it tried to show instead of tell. However there wasn't much to show either.

Like the name 'headcheese', the marketing of Hellhole didn't do it any favors.

Judging from the poster and ridiculous title, the viewer expects an umpteenth remake of The Exorcist, while in fact, a subtle psychological horror film awaits beneath the artifice.

Good cinematography, a strong cast, a clever story that isn't rushed, this thought provoking Polish horror movie unfolds like a modern be Rosemary's Baby, but better. Yes, better.

The atmosphere was very well done, and there were scenes at the end that made me want to frame them and hang them on my wall.

A dreary, unsettling religious horror with a compelling mystery, creepy atmosphere and some unexpected turns. This is a really nice atmospheric slow burn that bursts into an incredible finale. I was worried this was going to be another typical religious exorcism horror. It turns out to be much better than I anticipated. I got to admit it doesn't start off very interesting, but this film absolutely nails the atmosphere while also being very messy, and it's a good kind of messy. I wouldn't say this add too much to the religious horror subgenre, but a few unexpected turns make for an extremely effective and enjoyable film.

A slow-burn movie with a few plot-holes. It's a bit predictable and lacks logic
, like for exemple why would the monks make the worst, uncooked, shitty dishes possible out of the human meat they serve at meals? Shouldn't you try to cover the fact that you are serving something disgusting, maybe by cooking it in a decent way? Nooo, let's make it as disgusting as possible so the undercover policeman doesn't want to eat a single bite of it. Unfortunately the purpose of the monks is to serve him human flesh to awaken Satan, so WHY didn't they serve a nice, polished Hannibal Lecter recipe? I suppose the answer is that it needed to be disgusting for the audience...
, but it's still enjoyable (especially the ending).

Honestly it is not as bad as the Trakt score or even my rating would suggest. A 6 but a very strong 6 upwards to 7. The problem is the uneven pacing and halfway through I was disappointed that the movie was somehow becoming uneven and searching for a genre. I was debating whether I was watching a horror, a supernatural thriller, a cop show or at some points even badly written soap opera. When the two priests started debating out loud what could have gone wrong I could not even laugh they looked so stupid and out of place. But in the end there proved to be a clear plot and I kept thinking about it a few days later which means that in the end this is not fire and forget. Cinematography was really excellent, dark and gloomy - really placing the viewer in the monastic sorrounding.

This atmosperic horror has a great ending. The lead up to the finale isn't always that interesting but it's still better than I expected.
