Engaging, Well Performed, Obscure

Rajkummar Rao's latest thriller is a faithful and frame-by-frame remake of its Telugu predecessor which came out in 2020 starring Vishwak Sen. Hit is a slow-burning yet somewhat engrossing whodunnit that keeps the mystery till the very end. The screenplay somehow isn't very fast-paced and takes time to sink in as Rajkummar Rao who plays Vikram tries to solve a homicide case of a missing girl. He undergoes post-traumatic stress which like the Telugu film remains another unresolved mystery. The action, suspense, tense, and loud background score keep you on the edge of your seat for almost two hours. It also very smartly portrays the protagonist’s brilliance. Overall, the final mystery reveal may be polarising and silly for many, but Hit anyhow serves as a well-packaged thriller shouldered by Rajkummar's accomplished act and Sailesh's sincere storytelling.

To be honest, I wasn't a fan of the previous version just because of how less intimidating was the performance of Vishwak. Hence I just went in to see how Rajkummar delivers a remake. And as expected, he is dazzling as Vikram. His performance in the film keeps you hooked and on edge for the moat part of the film. When it comes to others, Sanya Malhotra has a very short role but she as usual is brilliant in it. The First Case is guilty of leaving many questions unanswered. Vikram’s history and his trauma are never fully explored, and then the film inexplicably ends on a cliffhanger, setting the stage for a second case. Maybe HIT would have been more enticing at home as a four or five-episode season of a web show. It is still a great watch but I do feel it could have been so much more. Let's hope the second case is better.
