The French expression for "I'm on the fence" roughly translates into "I have my arse between two chairs". The film _I Feel Good_ has its arse between two chairs.

The problem I have with this movie about a mentally unstable brother (a Jean Dujardin who's taking a welcome detour from his major features) who moves in with his psychologically fragile sister (who's also the manager of a charity depot) is that it is both funny and touching, yet never both at the same time.

Oddly enough, the jokes don't really start in earnest until the second act, which forces the viewers to reassess the film in the middle. What's more, rather than combining the humour with the redemption tale of the siblings and the outsiders they work with at the Emmaus, the film switches back and forth between the two poles, providing yet another distraction to the overall appreciation of the movie.

That said, however, the jokes often land and the emotional aspect hits home so while the film feels uneven, _I Feel Good_ still succeeds in making you feel good.
