Movie is "amateurish effort", "pretentious prose", "boring", "terrible cover", just like the protagonist's book.

Incredibly boring. Overridden with familiar messages, story beats and clichés. The dialogue and the comedic timing was just off. This movie has very amateur filmmaking on all facets and makes 90 minutes feel like 250 minutes.

I try to be the farthest thing from a _“This would actually never happen!”_ kind of person because this is a movie, not real life. But, uh, so much that happens in _I Used to Go Here_ feels very, very untethered to reality. I was hoping for a cute indie film, but this was just not it.

I’m sorry I am not normally a film snob AT ALL, but I really did not like this. The writing and line delivery was so flat and strange considering I’ve seen a few of these actors act well in other roles and liked them - the whole films dialogue felt just like listening to some bad background NPC dialogue in an old video game…

And to add more I didn’t like about this film, for some reason it decided to include THREE different inappropriate relationships with large power and age gaps literally within 15 minutes of each other, playing all of them off as fine and humorous. The 50 year old college professor (who is married) is frequently sleeping with/hitting on his students? Completely normal! A college student kisses his friends 60-ish year old mother after spending about 20 minutes with her? Yeah that’s fine! And the 35 year old published author, who has been offered the position of professor at the college, who comes to the college to do a reading for the students, sleeps with one of them too? That’s just what we do around here apparently!

So weird and uncomfortable to watch, and also boring… :/

I suppose the premise is good enough - a struggling writer is invited to her alma mater to give a talk about her new book. The cast is likeable enough - I've always liked Jacobs and I've been a fan of Clement going back to his days in Flight of the Concords. The movie started to lose me when the group went on their "mission" to get to the resolution. It just felt very misplaced in this movie, especially when you consider the movie's final couple of scenes. The film is largely cliched and there isn't anything here that you haven't seen done much better in other movies.

I don’t agree with the other reviews on this page. While the ending felt a little flat, the rest of the movie was enjoyably funny. If you want something unpretentious, give it a go.

Being an adult is weird. I'm 40 and I don't exactly feel "grown up". In my head I imagine I could still seamlessly fit in with people half my age, but I imagine in reality it would be similar to the awkward, yet not too awkward, experience of Gillian Jacobs' Kate. This is really a coming of age story but for 30- and 40-somethings. Jacobs is never quite sure of herself, but from the outside she seems totally normal. Jemaine Clement, opposite of Jacobs, also slowly reveals the oddities and unfortunate realities of adulthood not being all you'd expect. It's oddly enjoyable to watch them both fumble their way through faking being more put together than they are, even if some of the situations they find themselves in feel a bit too unreal.

I really like Gillian Jacobs, but this movie is so damn predictable. This movie pretty much follows the going-back-to-college-to-find-yourself template. Oh well, at least the movie wasn't that long
