This is a movie that I can imagine Roger Ebert would describe more eloquently than I could. In a sense this film is a character study of people that are quietly slugging away through life living just above the poverty line. They seem to drink a lot and are rather quiet and depressed. The main character seems to fit right in to this society. Unlike the others he is still hopeful.

Like the rest of the film the last scene is subtle. In a quiet way it puts a lens over the rest of the film and the characters in it.

The protagonist evolves from mute to a quite rational speaking character. The environment is oppressive, but the truth is that in that supermarket they treat their workers quite well.
