A spectacular homage to H.P Lovecraft. This movie often goes under looked by many people, but I consider it to be one of Carpenters best. It explores the wors of Lovecraft beyond weird tentacle monsters, which should excite fans of either Carpenter or Lovecraft.

To most people, the name John Carpenter is (and will always be) related to the "Halloween" franchise, but personally, I find "The Thing" and this film as the best works of his career.

I love me some Sam Neill, which is why when this was suggested to me, I gave it a go. But, I found this to be a yawn.
For me, it was a slow crawl all the way through and difficult to keep paying attention to. Nothing much happens outside some grotesque visuals.
This should have been a 20 minute short film at most, for what it is. I just do not see the appeal. Maybe it’s more so for those who enjoy gross/bloody, monster type horror? That just ain't me.

Being a big horror fan, was looking forward to this. Big mistake. This isn’t even horror, it’s ridiculous fantasy with no plot or storyline. The first 20 mins looked promising, but then the storyline itself went insane. Cannot relate to any character or event in this film. Unsure why anyone could enjoy this unless tripping on LSD. I certainly won’t be watching anything else that people associate with this Lovecraft fella. 1/10 Total weak sauce.

God. What a weird movie, but I loved it! It was extremely early 90s in the music choices and humor and special effects, but it worked well for the story, which I would describe as sort of... reverse Stranger Than Fiction combined with Bloodborne (video game). The creature effects were very good for the time as well. Definitely worth a watch, at least once, if you like Sam Neill, Lovecraft, or weird-but-good horror movies. Some may find the whole thing too cheesy, but I didn't.

This is not a gory or scary movie but it has a number of nightmarish images that may give you a chill. The plot centers around Sutter Cane an author who writes horror novels that are becoming reality for those that read them. It’s a little hard to follow but keeping the viewer disoriented seems part of the plan. This is a decent little "end-of-the-world" story.

Wow. That was such an exceedingly weird but fun trip! I didn't know what I was getting into or have any plan to go through John Carpenter's, but I saw his films are leaving Shudder so decided to give them a watch. I can confidently say that this is the scariest one so far. I watch horror films basically everyday so it's quite hard to find the one that truly gets under my skin, and this film does that. Having a wild concept, I love how the tone of this film is perfectly balanced all the way through. It's very tightly paced and almost no dull moments as there are so many layers to it and it just let your own mind horrify you. It does a great job maintaining an overwhelming sense of dread of losing touch with reality and effectively make you feel suffocated. Sam Neill is too good at selling his role in this, damn.

Glad to see others love this movie as much as I do. I love a good psychological ride and Sam Neill seems to be the right person for the job. From the practical effects to the H.P. Lovecraft references, this film is a great early 90's thriller.

Stands as Carpenter's last truly great film. There is soo much to like, between the Lovecraftian influence and the satire of Stephen King popularity, and Sam Neill's dedicated performance, you've got a winner. Such a great ending.

Yeah i saw this again after many years and it is still for me one of Carpenter's best work and one of the good 90s horror flicks. A must watch for every fan out there

The way the horror movies should be done.

It seems that the film makers of these days have forgotten how to do good horror movies, infact I stopped watching them a lot of time ago. This movie, instead, is the wonderful example of the great things that can be done, it's not just blood, screams and scary moments, but there is a whole story that keeps you glued to the screen thanks also to Sam Neill.
