Mind. Blown.

One of the greatest movies I have ever seen. Villeneuve is a god like genius. This is a must watch for anybody who, well anybody who wants to see one of the greatest masterpieces of modern cinema.

A haunting and a horrifying experience from beginning to the end, a masterful achievement in cinema. Denis Villeneuve crafts a gripping narrative that resonates with the viewer emotionally, seamlessly weaving together a mystery thriller between past and present unravelling a family history full of tragedy and horrifying dark twists.

The film is heavily complimented by the powerhouse of a performance by Lubna Azabal who manages to deliver raw emotions and portrays the character deeply. The quest to unravel family history had me glued to the screen through the runtime, mostly due to the masterful direction of Denis. The beautiful cinematography and the brutality of the premise and the landscape does a good job at the story which unfold on the background. "Incendies" is a movie that demands to be experienced leaving a lasting impression on the audience.

However, the movie is carried by the twist at the end, as horrifying and disturbing it is, I would not recommend this movie to everyone. It relies on the twist way too much and is probably Denis's least re-watchable movie yet.

Jesus Christ, this movie really takes you on the wildest freaking ride. So wild it excuses the slow pace, and almost justifies it, since it helps you sit with every emotion, every situation and every hardship, feel them and think about them. My favourite thing about the film is Azabal's performance, for sure. It does seem a bit far fetched and cruel, though, that after such an awful life a mother would
send her children back to where all the atrocities she experienced happened, and have them go through the process of finding out about them on their own
, but again, you excuse it for the way the search and discovery make the story so much more compelling. Absolutely loved it, and want to watch again.

Honestly, everything going on in the Middle East right now makes this a bit harder to watch. Not because it’s bad, but it makes you realize (even more) for how long that part of the world has been a complete mess. With no end in sight… That makes me kind of sad.

For the movie: it’s an interesting and powerful way to tell two connected stories. You watch a war film play out, that slowly answers the questions of the mystery that the children face. It’s really well done. And that ending, wow.

Perfect mystery with a bunch of twists that'll leave your jaw on the ground. ***Incendies*** is all about uncovering your family's past and discovering your origins. It takes place in two timelines; A drama mystery in the present and a civil war thriller in the past. The mystery slowly unravels and when past and present clash, you get one hell of a payoff (a tad bit far fetched though, but it's fiction). It's absolutely worth every 131 minutes. Brilliant storytelling on both ends and it really is perfect how they meet. It's hard to stomach in some parts and it'll certainly haunt you. Excellent performances, flawless direction and captivating story. I couldn't find a version with subtitles for the Arabic parts so i'm wondering if it's intended that way but it didn't keep me from understanding what was going on. The only worry I have with this movie is a rewatch, maybe it relies on that twist too much and it'll lose it's effectiveness.

I don't understand why people like this one so much. I loved Arrival, but this one is sooooo sloooow and predictable (yes, boring would be another word for it). Focusing so much on puzzlesolving and explaining and so little on emotions. The interiors of the protagonists remain the real mystery here.
Sad to me because I was expecting a lot from it. So be warned and don't expect too much. The twist is good, the message too, but everything else could have been cut to a good and solid short film imho.

Incredibly harrowing story of a mother's past. A journey to discover more about her reveals more pieces of the puzzle, which become more and more damaging but, never to the extent of being repetitive or less impactful. Intelligent dialogue and screenplay reward the audience for being observant. Relentlessly engaging and soul-crushing. Will leave you exhausted.

I wasn’t ready for _Incendies_ to be this good, but it touched me like a flame and then enveloped me like a fire until the end when I sat inspired like the pile of ash I became.

In her will, a mother tells her adult twins that she’s to be buried face down in the dirt with no tombstone until they deliver one letter to their father (“But he’s dead!”) and another to their brother (“But we don’t have a brother!?”)...

From the opening scene in an orphanage where child soldiers are being conscripted to the strains of Radiohead’s “You and Whose Army?”, Denis Villeneuve delivers a film that (despite slight detours onto twisting roads and melodrama) constantly engages the viewers’ attention.

The cast was overall very good, but Belgian-Moroccan actress Lubna Azabal deserved every award she won for her portrayal of Nawal, a woman who, like the character's native North Africa, suffers the worst of what men and their Gods can do.

_Incendies_: written on the edge of an Arabian sabre, directed with the heart pierced by it and imbued with the soul that it frees.

This was another film that appeared on several 'best-you've-never-seen' lists and it did not disappoint. The movie opens with a brother and sisters learning the will of their recently deceased mother. The will stipulates that each of them must go on a journey of a semi-disclosed nature. With that premise the movie goes off into a film that is at times difficult to watch as the children (mostly the daughter) trace their mother's unknown past. The ending is extremely unique and I didn't see it coming. The film does an amazing job showing how we need to resist hate.
