I do understand why there's such low rating to this cinematic art on IMDb. You need immense patience to understand and to feel the beauty behind an art. This movie is something that most of our "generational 15 seconds audience" will hate to sit through it and it's understandable. Not everyone deserves great art.

But I know one person does more than anyone. William Dafoe. He is THE ART.

Devoid of a single shred of drama or humour, _Inside_ is a bleak exploration of the wastefulness of wealth that transforms itself into a wastefulness of time by needlessly forcing itself to be a full-length feature. Dafoe's performance is betrayed by a distinct lack of plot and characterization. He's an interesting actor and man, but this character is not, and he alone cannot carry the film.

READ THIS FIRST. Look, there is one character. Things happen to him, but not much. There is some dialogue in the first few minutes, then that’s it. From then on, he is talking to himself. Occasionally. If you think this is for you, go for it. If that sounds too weird, save yourself from having later to leave a meaningless review like “that was boring”.

Slow
Seemed a little long. Maybe I would have liked it better if it was a shorter film instead of a full length movie.

Story 4

Great movie - it's a pretty slow burn to the punchline, but successfully builds tension throughout. DeFoe is amazing. Recommend for those who like something a bit different , just ignore the bad reviews - it's not an action heist film (thankfully).

It doesn't bother me that a movie is slow, in fact I usually do like them, but the story has to tell something, and this is 2 hours of almost nothing. First half or so is not that bad, but then it gets repetitive and it does not add much more. It could have explored the symbolism more deeply at least.

Also, in order to enjoy the story you have to ignore that it doesn't make sense. For example, the alarm
if the alarm went off, why did nobody checked the house, not the owner or the police?
Watching Willem Dafoe lick out the inside of a freezer was certainly an experience.

I'd go crazy too if the only song I could listen to was the Macarena.

I love movies set in a single place, and especially if there's just one character. This made it so much better since Willem Dafoe is one of my favourite actors and he can definetly carry a movie like this on his own. Very well written, since it was set up as an art heist but he ends up making the art himself. Like the colossal sculpture in the middle of the room, which has an obvious meaning. And the altar to his freedom. The art collected by the owner is pretentious compared to what Dafoe is creating just to survive. I have a feeling I'll watch this movie quite a few times just to find discover more. If you don't like slow movies, this definetly isn't for you. But for the people that do, this is a treat.

You may find the movie boring, or you may not. But, understand, it's not about the art, it's not about symbolism (although there's plenty of it) and it's not about whether Willem Defoe is a good actor. Go deeper.

If this was a short film from someone’s film school thesis, I am sure it would have reaped accolades. As a feature-length film, however, it is excruciatingly boring. I get every single thing they were going for - the ‘so close yet so far’ symbolism, the appreciation for art even as the end-times near. Nevertheless, as much as one respects the vision of the director or the talent of an artist, one ought to respect the audience’s time. This movie does not respect the audience’s time.

Covered in symbolisms and metaphors from start to finish, ***Inside*** is a psychological thriller about isolation, survivalism and art in many forms. It isn't your traditionnal thriller, as it doesn't have many thrills but it's symbolic as hell and has some repulsive grotesque moments. Willem Dafoe is the perfect conduit for said moments and he's excellent at playing unhinged. Top production quality and the setting is probably my favorite aspect, that appartment was way too neat at the beginning and you watch it slowly deteriorating just like our main character. My problem with it is it becomes repetitive very fast and the runtime is too long. It started really promising and I was enjoying the first half but the second half was hard to get through. It felt like it was missing something to elevate it but I can't put my finger on it. Once it's finished all you're left with are the symbolisms behind it but that's not quite enough to satisfy.
