A beautiful movie. It doesn't only feature amazing martial arts, but also focuses on the Qui of Wing Chun.

This movie has been on my watchlist for many years and last night I finally got to see it. I never knew the Ip Man series were based on a true story. The fact that it is makes the movie even more impressive. This movie puts the Art in Martial Arts. The movie is well written, funny and at time somewhat dark and raw. Can't wait to watch part II.

A martial arts biopic. I really enjoyed this but it has it's problems. At times laughable, cringe and melodramatic but at other times rightfully emotional and bleak—thankfully it was more of the latter! The story is ultimately predictable but it at least kept me captivated with how Ip Man would react to everything happening around him. I like his character and character arc. The martial arts action sequences are THE reason why this is elevated to 'great' though. Watching Donnie Yen kick the shit out of overly confident bad guys is so satisfying. Amazing creative choreography and impressive stunts and I think those scenes were well shot and edited. At other times it has some weird editing and overall it's a very ugly looking movie, I don't know why they went with that color grading. The acting is hit and miss also but it rarely misses in the physical scenes. I enjoyed all the villains. Great ending.

Seems a bit overrated. I enjoyed the Kung Fu choreography, but the script is somewhat juvenile, the protagonist embodying "Mary Sue" a little too closely.

There is so much to love about this. The story, Donnie Yen casting, the fact that he learned wing chun style for this movie and made it look super cool, the fast pace edits during fight scenes... I have tried to watch other wing chun films and they don't compare.

The story is a little bland but the fight scenes are amazing. One of the best martial arts movies I've seen. It's aged really well too.

A simpy great movie. The Fights, the Camera work and most of all the Story. Should be on every "To Watch" list.

A beautiful, if redundant, Chinese martial arts epic set at the onset of the second Sino-Japanese war. The eponymous focal figure Ip Man, drawn straight out of the history books, is the peaceful model of restraint and self-control. His easy smile, passive existence and unmatched skills make him very easy to pull for, especially when a trying second act pushes him past the breaking point, but the flick's deep reverence for his legacy strips away any chances at suspense or tension.

Though gorgeously choreographed and filmed, the major fight scenes are universally one-sided, with Ip himself rarely absorbing more than a few glancing blows on his way to flashily disarming and dispensing each opponent. Even his last foe, a towering Japanese army general who effortlessly conquers three of Ip's peers at once, leaves behind little more than a cloud of dust and a disappointed, unspoken "is that it?" when he quietly takes a knee. Undoubtedly a feast for the eyes, the road it walks is too straight and narrow to be considered anything more substantial.

Would have liked to have given this a higher rating, did find the ADR a little off putting at times though, and some of the sound design for the fight sequences were so over the top ha! But that's nit picking really, solid story and great characters, look forward to watching the second one!
