I love Jon Stewart and I'm definitely a Liberal, but this movie was just awful. It's Democrat America lost in the wilderness of the Trump years, looking for where they've gone wrong and unable to figure it out. Preachy, tone-deaf, and condescending.

@triseult Condescending? To whom? He painted the town's people in the best light of the movie. I think you missed the point of the movie - he wasn't creating this from a liberal point of view. He was showing how the whole system is broken, including the left.

From Jon Stewart comes the fun political satire Irresistible. When political consultant Gary Zimmer sees a video of a charismatic man at a town hall meeting, Zimmer goes to his small Wisconsin town to recruit him to run for mayor, but the race soon becomes a media circus once it gets national attention. Starring Steve Carell, Rose Byrne, Chris Cooper, and Mackenzie Davis, the film has a solid cast that delivers good performances. And Stewart offers a lot of clever satire, and wisely keeps it about the absurdities of the political system rather than attacking any political party. Still, there are some bits of crude humor that don’t really work, and a couple of the characters are underwritten. Yet while it has a few weaknesses, Irresistible is an entertaining comedy with some interesting things to say.

_Irresistible_ works best when it's a comedy, least when it's a preachy satire, and worst when it tries to end cleverly.

I’m not a big political guy, but I am a big Steve Carell guy! This one is a light-hearted watch that is easy to enjoy. It’s not outwardly hilarious, but it is one that could easily appeal to many.

Rating: 3/5 - 7.5/10 - Worth Watching

The film divides me. Jokes work most of the time - I particularly liked all of Rose Byrne's jokes and the advertisements. However, the story is boring and the ending was very moralistic. If it were a matter of manifesto, I prefer the works of Spike Lee. So the film is a worthwhile attempt, the problem is that it doesn't work.

Jon Stewart did a masterful job of showing how broken the US political system is. In fact, he might have too good of a job - the scenes where truth does not matter eerily reflect the current political climate. That said.... it is not a great movie. It is neither dramatic nor funny, and the slow pacing of the movie makes it an even tough movie to get through. I did see some reviews that thought that Stewart was condescending towards the people of Deerlaken. I didn't get that at all as I thought that he painted them in a sympathetic light for much of the movie before completely changing their story later on. He was clearly taking shots at the operatives on both the left and the right.

As an Australian who doesn't follow American politics closely, I found this movie to work best if you just switch off and don't think about it. It's nothing great, but there's a happy ending, albeit an empty one. I'd like to say that Hollywood staple Steve Carell carries this movie along, but I don't think even he could save it from its powerful mediocrity.

A vanilla movie despite the end twist that I didn’t see coming.

Like the comment below says, being clever doesn’t make for a good movie.

This movie belongs on the hallmark channel

I’d much prefer if Jon Stewart had decided to do a documentary series about the issues of partisanship, the failures of the media and the corruption that can occur in the system that we currently have for elections.

I hated Steve Carrell’s character from the beginning and in the end it seems as though that was by design.

Should of started the movie with a /s. To let everyone know this is meant as satire and sarcasm rather than a preachy movie to please a liberal crowd.
