Another film I watched with my who absolutely loved it. Her score 12/10, and my score 3 out of 5. My criticism is not so much about the directing or cinematography, but the source material. I think both Jane Austin and Charlotte Brontë novels are trash. My opinions of their novels mainly comes down the treatment of women in that time.

* Rochester threatens to break Jane's neck and likens it to snapping a reed.
* Rochester still has a wife, who he chooses not to tell Jane about until their wedding is interrupted. Rochester obviously still loves his wife enough to lock her away in an attic rather than sending her to the funny farm.
* Jane goes back to Rochester after turning down St. John's advances. The same Rochester, who threatened to break her neck, hides his wife in the attic, and manipulate Jane's emotions by flirting with Blanche.
* The story talks about a woman becoming independent and emancipated. Yet it seems clear both Rochester and St. John want to treat Jane more like a possession.

I thought it would make more sense for her to leave both men behind travel to Madeira and collect her inheritance from the late John Reed, and never look back.
