I grew up in Oklahoma, yet this is the first time I've seen a Will Rogers movie. It's easy to see why his name is still seen so often in the area: he has an easy likability, a homespun sense of earnestness and humor that just goes down smooth. He lights up the screen any time he's on, but in this movie it's hard to outshine the racism. I believe movies have to be judged in context, but yikes. This was my first exposure to Stepin Fetchit, and I'm not sure what to even say about that performance. Beyond that you've got the climax revolving around the redemption of a Confederate soldier and all the black folks literally whistling Dixie. Not good.
