'Judy' isn't anything special as a movie, but at least offers a respectful perspective on the final years of Judy Garland's life.

Renée Zellweger, on the other hand, was the glue that hold this together. Her embodiment of Garland is truly remarkable. I didn't see Renee. I see nothing but Judy. Everything from her long eyelashes, crooked smile, and the brutal aftermath of Hollywood.

I found this touching as it's sad to think of any Hollywood stars from this golden age as having to struggle. We see Renee Zellwegger do a fine job at portraying Judy.

However, I found that the story just wasn't enough to make a film from... Maybe we're all jaded now and almost expect this type of story. Who knows...? It felt a little empty for me.

One thing that could fill those areas that needed beefing out are the musical numbers. But therein lies the other problem, it's not Judy's voice. And I think this is one occasion where we should have had lipsyncing to the artist themselves. Alluding to the Wizard of Oz isn't enough to portray her vocal abilities. I think we needed reminding of them here - and I think it would have better portrayed the tragedy of her passing at a relatively young age (for the time).

6/10 for me. Not unlike Stan & Ollie - but I think that had a little more substance than this.

Zellweger puts on a spectacular performance as Judy, a gifted actress who sadly suffered at the mercy of Hollywood and a string of bitter men. She clearly enjoys the role and amazed me with her live singing. At the end, I didn’t feel like I knew Judy’s life any better, but the attempts to jump back to ‘wizard of Oz’ era were interesting.
For me, the film found its special moment when she encounters two eager fans waiting at the backdoor.

Admittedly I knew nothing of Judy aside from her role in Wizard of Oz and a pill issue, before seeing JUDY. After seeing this movie, I left with the same knowledge.

You get the sense early on Judy doesn't have control over what she wants, despite being very vocal. She commands a room, yet cannot command her own free will. You feel for her. But. I also don't?

The movie has me waiting for more, and it doesn't ever come.

This was a perfect reflection on this movie. Thank you, Matthew Luke Brady @bradym03

This film is terribly sad, sometimes brutally so, so, expect a cathartic response. Renée Zellweger is superb. Even though she sings Judy's songs (no voice overs here), we never fail to see Judy. Truly worthy of her Golden Globe nod, maybe there will even be Oscar attention (as I write this, the nominations and awards are just gearing up). As for the rest, Matthew Luke Brady has already said it beautifully. All I can add is my rating and I give the film a 7 (good) out of 10, although I think Renée deserves a 10 (outstanding). [BioPic]

Wow! You know who earned an Oscar for her portrayal of a famous singer? Elisabeth Moss in _Her Smell_, but go ahead and give it to Renee Zellweger for this caricature.

I'm only half joking, because in the second half of _Judy_, Zellweger dialed the crazy down to where we wondered only a little less why Taron Egerton didn't get this kind of awards attention for Rocketman. :person_shrugging_tone3::male_sign:

Even if the film takes some time to find its stage legs (it really comes into its own towards the middle in a scene where Judy dines with a couple of fans), it's still an informative look at the little girl behind the icon that was Judy Garland and eventually brings some emotion that sometimes even isn't too Hollywood. When all is sung and done, this is better than reading a book.

Absolutely beautiful film with a breathtaking performanve by Renée Zellweger. What an actress she is. Considering she performed the songs all herself and according to the special features on my Blu-ray these performances were also filmed live this is absolutely incredible. She definitely needs to get an Oscar for this.

Renée Zellweger is very good. The singing scenes are well done but there aren't enough. The rest of the movie is fine and generic.

She was just a child and I was wondering why they didn't show her parents. Did her parents know the movie studio was manipulating her into doing what they wanted and giving her drugs? I turned the movie off early because It was not showing her parents or guardians reactions to her treatment at the movie studio. Did her family not care and just want the pay she brought home?

Renee Zellweger did an amazing job portraying the icon that is Judy Garland. Such a tragic life eaten up by a machine that cared only for what it could get out of her until there was nothing left to give. Very sad indeed.

Renee Zellweger absolutely nailed it as Judy Garland. It was a solid movie, but man is it heartbreaking. Spoiler, you realize that she never found someone that really loves her, her children decide to stay with their father, she gets fired from her last gig, she never overcame her addictions, and she dies a couple months later from an overdose. A truly tragic story.

Renée Zellweger stars as Judy Garland in the rather formulaic biopic Judy. Based on a stage play, the story follow actress and singer Judy Garland in the winter of 1968 when she went to London to perform in a series of sold-out concerts. Zellweger gives a strong performance (both acting and singing), but the script is pretty weak; never really explained how she became a washed up star or her depression and addiction issues. And there are also a couple of time jumps to further confuse things. Still, Garland’s struggle does show through, as does her unique soul, and talent. Judy has some problems translating from stage to screen, but it still manages to be a fairly compelling character drama.

A well-done film, capped by an excellent, transcendent performance by Renée Zellweger. It's amazing how she disappears into the role--five minutes in, you're not seeing anyone but Judy Garland. The hair, the dresses, the *tiny* extra bit of nose, it all makes you forget the woman from "Bridget Jones' Diary." Renee tops it off by doing her own singing. A tour-de-force and a shoe-in for 2019's Best Actress, in my opinion. We'll see, right? Oh, and the woman playing the young Judy Garland was excellent as well.
