The Rock (a Samoan/black dude) as a Spanish Conquistador stuck in Brazil for 400 years (yet speaking a perfect English with an American accent) might be the least appropriate casting choice for him yet, and shows just how much the gap has increased between Disney's concern with milking the cash cow over crafting an engrossing story. Then again, the guy has already played an Akkadian warrior and a Greek demigod, so it's probably fine... hell, he could probably have been picked for queen Elizabeth instead of Helen Mirren and viewers would be none the wiser.

Apparently if you're an American actor playing a different nationality, keeping your native accent is acceptable only if you're the hero, as evidenced by Meth Damon and Paul Giamatti doing their best cartoonish rendition of German and Italian. Then to waste no time giving off any semblance of immersion comes the completely unnecessary CGI cat, the film's epitome of the writers' lack of creativity.

They were obviously going for a Pirates of the Caribbean feel with hints of The Mummy (English brother/sister find a mysterious artifact leading them on a dangerous adventure to a mythical land, recruiting a strong "American" dude along the way to guide them...), or maybe it's the other way around. Either way, they failed to take heed of whatever made those franchises fun and thrilling.

This movie was never short of laughter. It incorporated the same types of jokes heard while riding the attraction of the same name. The movie was a mix of Pirates of the Caribbean, Indian Jones, National Treasure, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. It follows similar plot to each of these movies. People want treasure > Bad people want the same treasure > They both find the treasure at the same time > The good people manage to get the treasure. Even though it's a recycled Disney movie, the jokes throughout the movie make it worth a watch.

I had a good time watching Jungle Cruise because the thrills just keep on coming. As someone who likes adventures on reel, Jungle Cruise met all my lofty expectations: mythology and legend, a smart-aleck skipper, an Englishwoman and her sweet-faced brother, and the Amazon rainforest. Give it a go even if you are not familiar with the Disney link.
