Truly an amazing animated movie! Ghibli done a superb job hand animating and creating the wonderful world of Kiki's which was written by Eiko Kadono.

The first Miyazaki film that doesn’t use his usual bag of surrealist tricks. Sure, the lead characters consist of a witch and a talking cat, but besides that it stays fairly grounded. It takes place in a recognizable location (it looks like Austria/Switzerland to me?) and once again the worldbuilding is very immersive, easily the best thing about the animation and film as a whole. The tone is very wholesome, it’s a light and breezy watch with beautiful visuals and a great score. However, much like _My Neighbor Totoro_, it doesn’t take enough artistic risk. It’s a fairly generic coming-of-age story that doesn’t hit many emotions or ideas that will stay with me for a longer period of time. It’s certainly more eventful than that film, and the more well defined protagonists make this a more engaging watch, but it’s too predictable and disposable for it to be great.

6.5/10

Miyazaki movies have a very particular charm that is hard to match. Similar to Pixar. While this is not my favorite of the Studio Ghibli films, this is a classic and I can understand why its withstood the test of time!

Rating: 3/5 - 75% - Worth Watching

It was lovely, warm and captivating all the way. I wish the end wasn´t so abrupt, it just ended without and actual and classical end.

I'm not a fan of cats and witches but after watching this, I just want to be a witch and have a talking cat. I'm so in love with this film.

I wanted to like this so bad, but it was very boring. No plot at all.

@lovesickdead perhaps because this is a fantasy film, hypothetically more focused on the infant audience, with the purpose essentially focused on personal issues, such as self-acceptance and self-discovery, in a synthetic and light way

@eumethusa Well, there are still better Ghibli movies out there.

Breezy, cheerful adventures with a thirteen-year-old witch (and her sarcastic talking cat) who leaves home to find her place in a new town. It's big-hearted and welcoming, as can be said of most of the Studio Ghibli catalog - colorful and fuzzy and full of life - but suffers from a lack of adversity and thus, falls a bit on the flat side. Self-doubt and adolescent shyness are her only major foils, and while those are worth exploring, they feel more like side acts than a main course.

Still, it's a delightful place to inhabit, a nice break from the doom and gloom of the outside world, and I enjoyed myself despite the relative superficiality. Kiki is a charming protagonist, bold and ambitious but also delicate and reluctant, and it's inspiring to watch her horizons broaden as she encounters different personalities and grows to love the coastal city she's chosen for her new home. A wonderful dose of escapism and fantasy, it's decidedly (perhaps intentionally?) light fare.
