Well choreographed fights in a glossy, japanese picture about chinese history based on a manga strip. Maybe this works better if you're a fan of the comics, apart from that it was kind of bland in the plot department and didn't have much going for it other than having high production value. Also some parts were quite reminiscent of the lord of the rings. Overall not my cup of tea.

@katzendachs They had the job of fitting 5 (of the current 57) volumes into a 130 minutes movie. They should've extended it up to at least 150 minutes to let it breath a little.
The first arc of the story, the "Civil War", is divided into 4 categories: Childhood and the death of Piao, the Old Temple, the Mountain People and the final fight. This single arc is the most "closed" one out of all. The reason the manga is the success it is and why it works is because this arc is the way it is. The only thing missing is the breathing moments between the 4 parts and the changes made to the Mountain People and the final battle.
This movie, imo, is a good adaptation for what it had available and a good movie to stand on its own, even if it's weirdly paced.
There is story and there is character but they are all subtle developments. Shin doesn't end the movie has he started for example. Karyoten and Yotanwa also have arcs but they were kind of pushed to the background in the movie. They are there but you have to really be looking for them.

@tzarye14 maybe I should've been clearer on that: i don't actually know the drawn source material . It's always hard to put books/comics into a movie and sometimes you deserve an A for effort. It was just the way it felt to me at the time I've watched it (where it had to contend with 50 other, completely different types of movies). Anyways - thanks for the heads-up, might rewatch it sometime.

Inevitable due to the popularity of manga/anime, but an optional film adaptation. What looks great drawn sometimes makes a strange impression in the form of a film. Excellent combat and cruelty coexist here with pathos and childishly simple intrigue. Well, it’s not J.Yimou

Very good comic work! At first, it was a little inexplicable. After entering the middle, the plot was compact and fascinating. The action design is very good, the texture is great, and it looks very enjoyable. By the way, Masami Nagasawa is a huge surprise!

Really enjoyable movie from beginning to end though I feel the beginning half had more oomph while they were setting up the story and viewers were seeing fighting scenes for the first time. The second half was OK and still enjoyable, but the first half was just better. Some special effects felt like they needed a bit more work for sure though
