I basically hated everyone at the start of the movie except for the main character. He was okay I guess.

I think it's okay to hold grudges to people who have treated you like shit and I think it's so stupid when people who don't know shit tell you that you should make up because that person is family.
So yeah, I kinda hated Elizabeth Olsen's character at the start, and the father, of course.
Honestly, I still don't like the father.
But the world isn't just black and white. Who we are is influenced by others, we do things we regret.
I was very much moved by the ending - although it was predictable - and it does show that he loved him in his own weird way.
I just don't want people to ever take away from a movie like this that you should just be friendly and open to your parents because they're family, even though they're (emotionally) abusive.
Because sometimes opening up to someone - hoping that maybe this time it'll get better - just ruins things more. So yeah, things aren't always like movies. Not to say that you can't make peace with stuff like that.

Aside from that, great acting, great music, okay plot. Actually better than I thought it'd be.

Despite being about a dying man and very strained relationship with his son, the pace, humour and simplicity still make this a feel-good film. Ed Harris is amazing in this film, it's worth watching for his performance. That and the script hold this otherwise simple story together.
The premise of the film is true - in 2010, the last Kodachrome developing lab, a family business in Parsons, Kansas, was the last remaining lab to develop Kodachrome film and briefly becama a mecca for film photographers. You don't have to be interested in photography to enjoy this film, it's a road movie and other than the basic premise, it's more about music. If you are interested in photography, the photos used in the film are from Steve McCurry and the camera Ed Harris' character uses is a Leica M4-P.
