It's mediocre, yet also really entertaining sometimes. In that regard, the closest comparison to this is Jurassic World.

Pros:
- Visuals and cinematography.
- Conflict within the group of characters.
- The characters of John C. Reily and Toby Kebbell (although underused)
- Action, particularly the climax.
- The editing stands out a few times.
- Nicely paced.

Cons:
- Too many characters, meaning you won't care about pretty much all of them. They also don't take their time to develop them, meaning that most of them come across as Fast and Furious cartoons.
- Some iffy CGI (not with Kong, but with the other creatures).
- Some minor moments that felt out of place or coincidental.
- Besides a few gags, all the humour falls flat.
- The second act drags a bit.
- Sometimes, the colour grading is overdone.

Grade: 5/10

@jordyep Within the Pro List I'd add the fact they tried to create a universe around King Kong, showing other monsters like Godzilla.

@1984goam This is basically a reboot of the old King Kong vs Godzilla movies. Nothing was "created"in this flick. But to add to the cons, the plot. How could you forget the horrible plot?

@blakblu I think the plot works just fine. Nothing to rave about, but I don't see how it's horrible. It's just a vehicle to drive the action.

@jordyep I humbly respect your opinion, but the plot was complete trash. They traverse an island of giant monsters to save one guy, that is nearly 100% dead. Common sense would be to send 100s of scientists and soldiers to handle this situation, with air support and all. So the plot was extremely horrible. The island people have no point except to tell the history of the two legged creatures.

@blakblu Like I said, it's a functional plot that drives the action. Yes, the character motivations aren't explored well enough (which I actually listed as a con), and the island people purely exist for exposition. At the same time, you shouldn't expect a Kubrick/Nolan layered plot. If you keep that in mind, I think you can't criticize it too harshly, since it's a focussed story in which nothing happens that feels too out of place.

What _Kong: Skull Island_ may lack in substance, it makes up for with sheer excitement.

Finally, a thrilling adventure movie, like in the olden days, but with the added creative possibilities offered by modern technology. Breathtaking scenery, a straightforward plot and jaw-dropping action sequences make this new Kong iteration a thoroughly entertaining movie, with Vogt-Roberts' dynamic direction not allowing for an instant of dullness. And the colors! In an era in which each movie has to be desaturated to feel epic, _Kong_ really felt as a breath of fresh air.

The movie isn't without its faults though, mainly regarding some underdeveloped characters that are clearly cannon fodder, a bit of over-reliance on the tone contrast between comedic and tragic and some rapidly switching character motivations. It could really have used 15 minutes more.

These faults are, however, dwarfed by the pure experience. An incredible visual treat with no shortage of excitement. Solid 7.5.

@r_lewis I don't think it makes up for it at all. The characters are so stupid. They could have done so much better with this idea

Fantastic looking movie, but dreadful dialogue, cliched plot points and characters doing inexplicably stupid things ruined this movie.

Good visuals e special effects. The locations for the scenarios is amazing. They used the old cliche about how humans don't respect the animals spaces and how they turned into the real monsters. There is not a great develop of characters but who cares about that while a giant monkey is fighting against a giant lizard/dinosaur?

A change of pace for the director, following the relatively low key (and excellent) The Kings of Summer. He handles this behemoth of a blockbuster well, with decent CGI, exciting action, interesting characters and engaging, if thin, story. Only Jackson's turn, channeling the spirit and descent into madness of Marlon Brando's Apocalypse Now character, is disappointing and in my opinion not needed as there are other characters who could have used more screen time. Overall, this is a good film with many moments of shock and wonder.

Kong: Skull Island doesn't really prove to me that Warner Brothers learned anything from the flaws Godzilla had 3 years ago. This movie was promising but the characters are so dull and unlikeable that the film becomes a bit of a chore to watch. Kong takes a back seat to other monsters much like Godzilla did. John C. Reilly is possibly the best thing about this movie. He was the only character I liked and he was the only character that was funny. When Kong does show up he steals the show as he should. The action is great and I would say that I enjoyed the movie overall but I was expecting so much more.

Better than Godzilla.

Jordan Vogt-Roberts is a promising director. He is very good.

The weak part of this movie is definitely the screenplay. The characters could have been a little more developed. I didn't care much about them, and the death of some of them did not affect me as I would.

The action sequences were awesome, the cinematography was beautiful. John C. Reilly, Shea Whigham and Kong (obviously) were the best part of the movie. The rest of the cast was solid (the screenplay didn't help). The skull crawlers were also very good.

Overall, good movie that could have been great.
