There is an undeniably endearing Finnish quality to Fallen Leaves; a bumbling, awkward romance movie that is somehow both tragic and light simultaneously. It frames the hardships of the working class in surprisingly saturated colour, punctuates it with current international tragedy, and tells the tale of those discarded by life, stuck in-between and just trying to get by. A charmingly stilted romance, some may find it awkward but I connected with it and enjoyed everything it was putting down.

To say that this film is slight would be an understatement. We are dropped into a world of people that are seemingly unknown to anyone. From the outside, it looks to be a dark and lonely place. But if you look closely, there seems to be glimpses of hope. This movie is about those flashes of hope.

In the amazing world of AK, which he sometimes allows us to look into, does time flow/stand still? according to its own laws, there are the eternal 70s, no matter what happens around. But the main thing is still the wonderful people who live, sing, love, joke, and drink so soulfully, like family. You forget that this is just a poem

I adored this movie. Lonely, introverted people can relate to the characters. Loved the deadpan humor. The cinephile joke got a big laugh out of me.

A straightforward (and somewhat naive) suburban love story presented with deadpan humor in a bleak, hyper-stylized fashion. Mostly worth checking out for some delightful color choices and framing. While it may lack a bit of bite, the short runtime makes it quite enjoyable and accessible.

In 'Fallen Leaves', Ansa (Alma Pöysti) and Holappa (Jussi Vatanen) each lead a pretty bleak life in Helsinki as part of the working underclass. While news about the war in Ukraine repeatedly plays on the radio in the background, they both go about their dull everyday lives, sometimes changing jobs, until they meet. He is an alcoholic, and I wouldn't necessarily say that sparks flew at their first meeting. But somehow, they develop some sort of romance. However, the movie is far too dry for my taste, even if it is well made. Not a single character, whether main or secondary, shows any emotion; instead, the lines of dialog are recited completely deadpan. I realize that this is a stylistic device, but overall, I just didn't like it.

Like a forgotten reuben: dry and tasty on wry.

This film tickled my heart thanks to characters I have a lot in common with, and not just the alcoholism part. Like me, these are vagabonds of the heart looking for a soul to call home, hobos of the mind out scrounging for tips, or spiritual drifters of the wasteland looking for a ride or die.

Fallen Leaves is funny in the not-out-loud kind of way, cute in the non-awww sense of the word, and romantic in the anti-saccharine definition.
