I have the same reaction to nearly all these poetic realist films of the 30s--I'm head over heels with Jean Gabin, who just oozes personality and character, and I find myself disengaged from the rest of the movie, which is dreary at best and dull at worst. This one involves Gabin's Francois in love with one Francoise, who is in some sort of relationship with a slimy dog trainer, and so Gabin has a revenge relationship with the dog trainer's partner and...I just couldn't maintain interest in this. Reminded me a lot of Carne's work in Le Quai des Brumes, and the comparison isn't a favorable one for me. Excited to revisit Les Enfants in a few weeks.

Slow paced but a pleasure to watch.

Luminous cinematography.
