I find it sad that so many people are so narrow-minded that they will not watch a movie that is black and white or, in this case, is subtitled. I feel sorry for people who refuse to watch a movie like Life Is Beautiful just because it is a foreign film. They have no idea what a beautifully acted and directed film this is, and they'll never know what an amazing experience they are missing.

Life Is Beautiful manages to walk the extremely thin line between humor, fantasy, and tragedy. Sure, the film is clearly comedic, but nevertheless it manages to very effectively communicate the tremendous losses suffered in the Nazi concentration camps and has scenes at least as intense as any scene in Schindler's List.

This is one of the best films that I have ever seen. It manages to be so encompassing that you hardly notice the subtitles are even there. I proudly cast my vote of 10.

Beautiful characters and beautiful story, beautiful on so many levels. I still can't figure out if it broke my heart or if it made it bigger. Maybe a little bit of both.

La Vita è Bella (1997), is a bittersweet story of a Jewish-Italian waiter—Guido—who presents us to his sweet and delightful fantasy world with his quite comical yet, additionally, endearing nature.

The film opens up with an utterly enchanting love story between Guido and an elegant school teacher named Dora, who ultimately marry and have an endearing little son—Giosué. Unfortunately, with the film being set during the World War II phase, their happiness is ceased when Guido and his family are sent to a concentration camp, separating Guido and Giosué from Dora.

The quite moving, yet heart breaking part of this film is when Guido attempts to divert his son from the reality of their situation in order to conserve him by telling him that the concentration camp is some form of game that comes with a grand price.

The beauty, heartache and authenticity of this film is extremely astounding to me. La Vita è Bella brought me so many different forms of emotions. This is a 100% recommended movie from me. Watch in Italian!

Two very different halves of a great movie. It can be so happy and tragic. The first was a nice love story but the second half is much harder to watch. Roberto Benigni's energy really carries the movie well.

A wordless film, of how beautiful and sad it is. Is one of the few movies that I consider totally necessary for a person to watch before they die.

I actually managed to watch "Life is Beautiful" without any prior knowledge. I really didn't know anything about the movie, and oh boy, the twist in the story really gave me whiplash, even though it was foreshadowed at some point. In the beginning, I found the main character Guido a bit too exhausting and the whole plot too silly in the first hour. But the second half of the film more than makes up for it. Roberto Benigni's Guido remains true to himself despite the clearly changed circumstances. In the end, it's a sad but also heartwarming story about the power of love, family, and humanity in the most difficult circumstances. Perhaps the film sometimes lacks the necessary seriousness, but this can be easily overlooked.

At the risk of being unpopular (based on the other reviews) I actually thought the main character was quite annoying.

Stealing the Rome inspectors role and then making things up about Italians being a super race I'm guessing was appropriate at some point, but I didn't think it was funny, nor do I see how a woman would fall for a man who would pretend to be other people in order to curry favor.

When he was in the opera house, and kept waving his hands effectively disturbing the woman next to him, I can't imagine she wouldn't be annoyed as all hell.

I was excited to watch an Italian movie, because it's rare to me, and I was enjoying listening to the language, but I think the humor is just a bit too dated for me to enjoy. I sadly couldn't make it through the whole film so I'm not going to rate it as I feel it's not fair.

You've missed the point completely - and then stopped watching midway through...

Rewatch it with an open mind. And pay more attention.
