This movie has been in my library for a long time. Unwatched.
I prejudiced this movie too much.

Why? Because I thought, it is a movie about a boy who's getting in trouble, and finds himself on a small rescue boat on the ocean with a tiger. And the tiger. is getting his very best friend, they r gonna survive and: HAPPY END.

A Boy.
A Tiger.
On a boat.
Before watching this movie I thought, okay, this might get REALLY boring. Well I did not got bored at all! There was so much happing all the time.
I do not want to spoiler, but I loved the ending as well. Not the real big Hollywood - Ending where everyone is happy.

Stupid plot. Well, it wasn't.

When you watch this movie, you will get funny scenes (especially in the beginning), and really good actors.
You get stunning pictures and I do not mean the tiger by that. Sure the tiger / animals were GREAT, but I loved the pictures around the boat really much.

Life of Pi is simply magnificent, a truly masterpiece and is now part of my all-time favorite movies.
From the technical point of view, it is astonishing, the colors dance with the forms to create landscapes to take your breath away, it is amazing to see how realistic a CGI can be nowadays, even if they have filmed 4 different tigers, Suraj Sharma (Pi) was never even near a real tiger.

Life of Pi is not just a survival story of a castaway in challenging conditions. While all this is present, it is a simple fixture for a table of allegorical representations of several life happenings, survival instinct, faith and affection. Interconnected, the film makes no judgments about the authority in relation to each other, leaving the choice to the viewer, who will decide according to his own disposition on life, faith and relationships.
The history is just perfect, it is full with symbolic meanings that you only realize at the end of the movie, both the introducing and the ending wrap the main history giving it even more meaning.

Ang Lee performs probably the most significant film of his career with the adaptation of the book bythe canadian Yann Martel. The reflection of Taiwanese filmmaker is noticeable in the way each image with meaning grabs and transforms simple scenarios as a boat on the water to subliminal images full of spiritualism.

Life of Pi is a technical marvel and a treasure film destined to become a modern classic. In my personal opinion, this is a movie you must see, and ofc among the best of the year.

I watched this movie for the 3rd time today. I always love the visuals and the incredible cgi. This movie has some of the best cgi you will ever see, it's incredible. The movie is worth seeing for the visuals alone, not to mention the brilliant sound editing and great acting from Sharma.

Now here come spoilers so stop reading if you haven't seen the movie.

Now in the past I have criticized this movie for the ending. The movie seems to be telling the audience that despite the clear allegory of the animals story, that is the one you should believe. I don't think that is the case. The story Pi told was clearly allegorical and the plot rests on that. The zebra who's leg is broken was a sailor who was hurt, the orangutan was his mother, the hyena was the cook and the tiger was pi. The sailor was hurt and the cook killed him and ate him. The mother attacked the cook and the cook killed her. Pi then kills the cook. In the story the zebra is killed and eaten by the hyena and the orangutan attacks the hyena and ends up getting killed. The tiger kills the hyena. The movie shows the events of the story and then uses the rest of the movie to show a battle between Pi and the tiger. This represents pis battle with this incredible anger inside of him. Pi says in the movie that the tiger can't be tamed but it can be trained. When Pi survives the tiger leaves unceremoniously. The story represents Pi's battle with himself and his deliverance has freed him from anger. The first 2 times I watched it I thought the ending was saying we are supposed to believe the animals story. It ends with the reporter saying he likes the animals story better and pi responding "and so it goes with God" I always thought pi was saying that is the true story, this time I believe he's saying that's the story God also chooses to believe, as if to say Pi believes God has forgiven him for what he's done. The reporter then opens the report and shows how the investigators wrote about the Bengal tiger story, I always thought this was stupid when they clearly believed the true story, I realize this time that they were covering his ass. I always thought the ending to the movie was flawed for making us believe the ridiculous story, I realize now that was the wrong way to look at it.

Overall LIfe of Pi is one of my favorite films of the last few years, featuring some of the best computer work out there. 9/10.

Visually, this movie traps yourself from the beginning to the end.

The story is really deep and moving and the performances are plainly good.

A must to be seen.

My rating: 4 out of 10 stars

A young man who survives a disaster at sea is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While cast away, he forms an unexpected connection with another survivor: a fearsome Bengal tiger.

I did not have huge expectations on this movie since it is not exactly my style of movie but nevertheless I have to say that I was disappointed. The movie is certainly quite beautiful to watch, at least part of it. However it is also a movie with a strong theistic agenda. Even though it is, luckily, not really religious/political extremism it is thick and intruding nonetheless. I was expecting Pi to actually learn something during the course of his adventure but he does not. He starts the movie gullible and foolish looking for meaning in life (religion) and the movie ends pretty much in the same way with him claiming that he had faith and therefore he survived. Yet none of the decisions he made was based on faith but simply pragmatical decisions of survival. If anything the movie proved that faith or religion had nothing to do with it.

As I said the movie was, partly, quite beautiful to watch and this is entirely what rendered it the stars that I gave it. For the rest it was a very boring movie. The only mildly entertaining part was the scenes on the boat with Gérard Depardieu playing the very unpleasant cook. As beautiful to watch as they were many of the scenes were quite unrealistic though and had an artificial look to them even when, I believe, it was not intended. We bought the movie because my youngest daughter loves movies about animals but not even she was overly entertained by this movie.
