I wanted to like this. It seemed like a charming little film. But the terrible camerawork got in the way. HOLD! THE! CAMERA! STILL! Weirdly the first few scenes were fine, but as soon as she got in the car to go to her family it was like they handed the camera over to someone with serious Parkinson's. Fine, I can understand wanting to use stylistic changes to demonstrate a character is going through a period of transition, & wanting a more naturalistic shooting style, but you still need someone with steady hands to hold the camera! The odd movement & occasional drift is understandable & adds to the loose style, but constant wobbling doesn't. What's more, other than switching to handheld shooting, there didn't seem to be much difference in shots or cuts. Skipping ahead through the film, I saw that the steady shots came back towards the end, so I'm assuming it was deliberate, but it was a weird choice & handled really badly.

I can put up with awful dialogue & terrible acting, because often those things can be funny, & the rest of the film can make up for the badness if everything else is done well. But you can't make bad camerawork entertaining & nothing can really distract from it.

If you want to see a good film about a novice nun reconnecting with family before taking her vows, I recommend Ida, a Polish film that won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film (it was also nominated for Best Cinematography).
