Not the hatchet job I was expecting; this is a low-key but interesting version of the events surrounding the story of Lizzie Borden. Whether it's true or not, of course, nobody will ever know.

_Lizzie_ was pretty good. Based on the true story of Lizzie Borden who was suspected of murdering her father and stepmother in Massachusetts in 1892. Much of the film is about the events that led up to the murders; the pacing can be a little slow at times, but there are some great moments. The parts about the actual murders themselves and the aftermath are fantastic, though. Some amazing performances from Chloë Sevigny, who played Lizzie, and Kristen Stewart, who played the housemaid Bridget. The film does only offer one interpretation of events – there have been a number of theories about what happened – but it tells a good story.

Not sure how accurate this is, I've read it takes quite a few liberties...but I will say this: The movie is extremely effective and the acting across the board is superb. It may be a slow burn....but TRUST. It's worth it for the last 15 minutes. So, so worth it.

the acting was all right, but otherwise I didn't like the movie. It was boring and I am certain, I will have forgotten about it shortly.

Could do with a bit more vitality, but the acting is superb

Written by Bryce Kass, and directed by Craig William Macneill, Lizzie is based on the cause célèbre of Lizzie Borden (not to be confused with director Lizzie Borden, or extreme porn star/director Lizzy Borden), who was accused and subsequently acquitted of the axe murders of her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts in 1892, a crime that is still officially unsolved. A "smash-the-patriarchy" (to use a quote from producer and star Chloë Sevigny) revisionist take on the material, the film presents Borden as a protofeminist lashing out against patriarchal oppression, homophobia, and sexual assault. Strikingly contemporary in its thematic concerns, this long-time passion project for Sevigny adopts the perspective of the :pound_symbol:MeToo movement, proposing a version of events wherein Borden is forced to actively fight back against a lifetime of subjugation. Although the languid pace will alienate many viewers, whilst the liberties it takes with historical facts will irk others, there is much to praise here, including fantastic cinematography, terrific sound design, and flawless acting.

Not knowing the. Story of Lizzie Borden before I hadn’t realized that this was one of the theories. Movie was okay. I like Chloe Sevigny. Always a great actress.

Maybe it's just that this story has been done to death, but I thought it dragged and was rather dull. The only new addition to the story was this contemporary, revisionist nonsense about Lizzie's sexual awakening and her constant abuse, and it was cringeworthy. They attempted to portray her as some kind of antihero for some strange reason. Probably virtue signaling. So that was groan-inducing too. Sevigny is great in the role, and it's unfortunate she's wasted here. Meanwhile Stewart does her usual two-expressions routine, so she doesn't even feel like a real character.
