A huge mess of a movie but with its heart in the right place and a major undertaking as far as science fiction and computer graphics at the time. Unfortunately the movie itself falls so short it's hard to look past the script

Holds up, though it was hard to imagine Albert Finney as a "hot doctor" that all these bikini models and television actresses were throwing themselves at. Of course, he was rich! Michael Crichton ("Jurassic Park," "Westworld") directed this from his own script, and it still holds up--even today, they're talking about how long it will be before actors are completely replaced with CGI versions of themselves. And I still find that Looker gun--and those creepy leaps forward in time--fascinating. It plays with the standard editing of a film to skip ahead, having us and the characters "miss out" on portions of the film. Great job, and Susan Dey was charming.

Had to "look" this again, watched it probably in the 80's for the first time.
Thought it had something to do with subliminal advertising, and actually it does on some level.
If you look past the era specific music and sound effects, it actually is a decent movie!
An original story, good pacing, action and acting,
I was amazed that a movie produced in 1981 already showed how important advertising was.

P.S.
In my opinion, the Looker device is something like the Neuralyser as seen in the Men In Black comics (and films)

P.S.2
Loved the themesong!

One of the most effective stunts ever is in this. The plot feels a little unrealized but I liked the overall aesthetic enough for a Friday night viewing.

Intriguing suspense/sci-fi film commenting on media and an absurd standard of beauty...definitely some large plot holes/lack of plot explanation.
