Very dull movie. It ultimately is just a retelling of events without having much to say on the matter. It starts to realize this at the end but it is far too late. If you want to know about the Norwegian black metal scene, Wikipedia would be a better help than this.

I really enjoyed this movie. It isn't a fully accurate portrayal of the real life events it is based on, but, uh, it's a movie, not a documentary.

Do not watch. Highly avoid. This is the worst telling of events that happened during the early 90s. And it is not accurate 99.9% time. Once again, I say, highly avoid this crap from watching.

It was definitely a fun and entertaining movie. It’s pretty dull in its own way, but it fits the movie, and the story. If you want fun and excitement, than go watch some Adam Sandler or something, but don’t hold those type of expectations for this movie.

Goddamn that was an experience. Definitely don’t watch this if you're triggered by self-harm and suicide. This film is based around one of the founders of the Norwegian black metal scene, Mayhem. I can’t speak to how accurate this depiction is but what I do know it manages to create an engaging narrative, compelling characters and provocative situations. It tells you there is going to be lies so some changes are expected. The story focuses on a poser who becomes a much bigger threat than those he wanted to imitate. The members are not good people and it's understandable they made the protagonist likeable. Rory Culkin was phenomenal! So was everyone who was in this. The violence is brutal and relentless, even more disturbing knowing it did actually occur. The makeup and effects were great! Oh and it's strangely homoerotic. I highly recommend this film to everyone! It's available on Hulu.

It's a well-made film, tho I'm not sure how accurate it is to the true story. Its unpleasant, and offensive, which is only to be expected given the subject matter. I appreciated it but I didn't necessarily like it.

I heard the complaints coming in but Death Metal has always been a fascination of mine... because of the book this movie took its name from over fifteen years ago. This seems to only be the somewhat fictionalized story of Mayhem, which is fine.

Even though a lot happens in this movie, it still somehow manages to be a bit boring and every single character is a total piece of sh*t. I think what I like most is that in a subculture obsessed with not being a poser, this movie blatantly makes them all out to be just that. Because screw em.

Overall it's a missed chance with a great IP on an incredibly interesting topic and source material. Not awful, but a real shame, this genre doesn't get enough chances to around blowing them.

Equal parts funny and harrowing; an enjoyable "true story"

Equal parts darkly funny and unflinchingly disturbing, the film is primarily aimed at people who know little-or-nothing about the scene, as it seems unlikely it will receive much in the way of approval from current black metal acts, who will undoubtedly dislike their art form being made the butt of much of the ironic humour. Åkerlund never takes the scene as seriously as it takes itself, and, depending on your perspective, that's either the film's greatest strength or its most egregious failing.
